| Grace That Keeps He saved us and called us to a holy life, not according to our works but according to his own design and the grace bestowed on us. – 2 Timothy 1:9 Before Jing met the Lord, he would “close down” the strip bars in their city. Booze and women were a regular part of his life. One day, deep in debt and depressed because he couldn’t buy simple Christmas food for his children, he tried to kill himself. Just as he was about to hang himself, his cellphone rang and the call was an answer to prayer — a much needed financial blessing that came just in the nick of time. Today this same man leads, serves and gives of himself to the Lord and his Catholic community, leading others to the Lord. In spite of his weakness, Jing accepted God’s grace — grace that prevented him from killing himself, grace that led him to live a new life, and grace to continue in the life of good works. You may not have tried to kill yourself. You might not have been buried in debt. You might have lived a regular and boring life. Still grace has accompanied you and accompanies you. May we all gratefully embrace God’s grace, an undeserved favor that we need. Joy Sosoban (jsosoban@gmail.com) REFLECTION: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). I accept Your grace, Lord. Let me live a holy life. St. Norbert, bishop, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1ST READING In these words lie a fundamental truth of our salvation: “Not because we have done anything of ourselves.“ Jesus is the one who has saved us through His cross and resurrection in obedience to His Father’s will. Let us realize the truth of this fact and so surrender our lives to the idea that we are truly dependent on God’s mercy and that we are incapable of saving ourselves. 2 Timothy 1:1-3, 6-12 1 Paul, an Apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God for the promise of life in Christ Jesus, 2 to Timothy, my dear child: grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 I am grateful to God, whom I worship with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, as I remember you constantly in my prayers, night and day. 6 For this reason, I remind you to stir into flame the gift of God that you have through the imposition of my hands. 7 For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control. 8 So do not be ashamed of your testimony to our Lord, nor of me, a prisoner for his sake; but bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God. 9 He saved us and called us to a holy life, not according to our works but according to his own design and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus before time began, 10 but now made manifest through the appearance of our savior Christ Jesus, who destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel, 11 for which I was appointed preacher and apostle and teacher. 12 On this account I am suffering these things; but I am not ashamed, for I know him in whom I have believed and am confident that he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day. P S A L M Psalm 123:1-2, 2 R: To you, O Lord, I lift up my eyes. 1 To you I lift up my eyes who are enthroned in heaven. 2 Behold, as the eyes of servants are on the hands of their masters. (R) As the eyes of a maid are on the hands of her mistress, so are our eyes on the Lord, our God, till he have pity on us. (R) GOSPEL Scripture is not interested in semantics; it is interested in presenting to us the truths that we need to know for our salvation. This is what we should try to derive from them — and not try to outsmart one another in the clever use of scriptural arguments or positions. We waste an enormous amount of time and energy if we lose our focus. Let us all try to avoid this sin. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION I am the resurrection and the life, says the Lord; whoever believes in me will never die. Mark 12:18-27 18 Some Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to Jesus and put this question to him, 19 saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us, ‘If someone’s brother dies, leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother.’ 20 Now there were seven brothers. The first married a woman and died, leaving no descendants. 21 So the second married her and died, leaving no descendants, and the third likewise. 22 And the seven left no descendants. Last of all the woman also died. 23 At the resurrection when they arise whose wife will she be? For all seven had been married to her.” 24 Jesus said to them, “Are you not misled because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25 When they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but they are like the angels in heaven. 26 As for the dead being raised, have you not read in the Book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God told him, ‘I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? 27 He is not God of the dead but of the living. You are greatly misled.” think: Scripture is not interested in semantics; it is interested in presenting to us the truths that we need to know for our salvation. T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR 1 Kings 1-2 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | WHAT WAKES YOU UP EACH DAY? A popular brand’s commercial goes: Para kanino ka bumabangon? (Who do you rise up for?) Applying it to our daily lives, it asks us how we rise up to the daily challenges that test our character and true values. Following Jesus is not an easy path. Rejections and doubts can come in many forms: erroneous teachings, divisions in the communities, and numerous injustices. Then and now, there are many ways that lead us off-center, away from the truth and life of being a disciple of Christ. Paul’s letter to Timothy acknowledges the hardships that the ministry entails. Even Paul’s imprisonment attests to the suffering that testimony to the Gospel embraces. Paul reminds Timothy of the spirit of courage he received from the laying of the hands, a flame of faith passed on from his ancestors. The ember that Paul received led him to face imprisonment, rejections and sufferings because he kept alive the faith that Jesus overcame death. How many saints and Christians have testified and faced rejections and martyrdom for the sake of the Gospel? How many more will embrace the cross for the sake of dignity of people? It is easier to keep your mouth shut and follow the crowd. Can we witness to that which is most important for us? Can we be accountable to the faith we profess? Truth-tellers and prophets shine in the dark! Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J. reminds us, “What we are in love with, what seizes our imagination will decide everything.” Fr. Teodulo P. Gonzales, S.J REFLECTION QUESTIONS: What hardships do you go through for the sake of the Gospel? What is the source of your courage in bearing witness to what you truly believe in? How can you testify to your faith in times of injustice and doubt? Dear God, grant us courage to bear witness for Jesus and the Gospel. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
