| THE RICH IN LOVE “They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything — all she had to live on.” – Mark 12:44 You said “I love you” and you gave me P20. Am I supposed to believe your love? If you are burning a hundred dollar bill to light up your cigar, and your name is Bill Gates, I don’t have to believe your love. If you are a poor beggar, who digs fastfood trash bins for leftover food to heat for dinner, and you weren’t so lucky tonight and the other scavengers pushed you out when they reached the garbage can ahead of everybody else; and that P20 is your only hope for food tonight, yet you still gave it to me, then I think there’s not much room for me to doubt that you love me. God is rich in everything! Therefore, doubting the love of this rich God is justifiable, right? Wrong! Yes, God is rich in everything. But He has only one Son. When Jesus saw the poor widow, He saw His Father. When the sacrifice was demanded for the salvation of all, God slipped His hand into His cosmic pocket, His two copper coins is Jesus. And He gave Him up for you and me. 9 REFLECTION: Have there been times in your life when you doubted the love of God for you? His answer to all doubts is the Cross. Lord Jesus, may I experience the uncontainable love of God in my heart every time I look at Your Cross. May You give me that grace today. Amen. St. Ephrem, deacon and doctor of the Church, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1ST READING Paul exhorts us to be brave when we come under trial. This was a serious matter in the early Church as trials were often a prelude to martyrdom. Trials today normally indicate a level of discomfort and struggle. This is a long way from the gravity of trials 2,000 years ago. Let us remember this the next time we are tempted to complain of the difficulties we are experiencing in our faith life. 2 Timothy 4:1-8 1 Beloved: I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingly power: 2 proclaim the word; be persistent whether it is convenient or inconvenient; convince, reprimand, encourage through all patience and teaching. 3 For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine but, following their own desires and insatiable curiosity, will accumulate teachers 4 and will stop listening to the truth and will be diverted to myths. 5 But you, be self-possessed in all circumstances; put up with hardship; perform the work of an evangelist; fulfill your ministry. 6 For I am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith. 8 From now on the crown of righteousness awaits me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance. P S A L M Psalm 71:8-9, 14-15, 16-17, 22 R: I will sing of your salvation. 8 My mouth shall be filled with your praise, with your glory day by day. 9 Cast me not off in my old age; as my strength fails, forsake me not. (R) 14 But I will always hope and praise you ever more and more. 15 My mouth shall declare your justice, day by day your salvation. (R) 16 I will treat of the mighty works of the Lord; O God, I will tell of your singular justice. 17 O God, you have taught me from my youth, and till the present I proclaim your wondrous deeds. (R) 22 So will I give you thanks with music on the lyre, for your faithfulness, O my God! I will sing your praises with the harp, O Holy One of Israel! (R) GOSPEL The widow’s mite is a great story to reflect on as it puts in perspective the things we have to offer for the work of the Kingdom of God. The most important thing we offer God is the gift of our obedience, the generosity of our surrender, and commitment to lives of service. The widow gives what little money she has and in so doing signifies that she is ready to give all in service of the Gospel. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Blessed are the poor in spirit; for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Mark 12:38-44 38 In the course of his teaching Jesus said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, 39 seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation.” 41 He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. 43 Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, “Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. 44 For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood.” think: The most important thing we offer God is the gift of our obedience, the generosity of our surrender, and commitment to lives of service. T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR 1 Kings 9-11 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | GAINING IN AUTHENTIC GIVING “It’s the thought that counts!” We have heard this many times. In the Gospel scene, we see rich people dropping large sums into the treasury. But Jesus noted that they were giving out of their surplus. They can afford well their contributions even though they are relatively big. Some may argue that the large sum would go a long way in helping the temple. But it is not just about what it could do but what the attitude of the donor is. Besides, not much effort and sacrifice are invested in the giving. On the other hand, the poor widow who gave two small coins amounting to a few cents, gave from her poverty — all she had and her whole livelihood! In the eyes of Jesus, she gave more. It was a great sacrifice for her. She was more concerned about the welfare and support of the temple which she serves. Therefore, what counts before the Lord is not the amount but the heart you put into what you give. When we were constructing the burnt parish church of St. Alphonsus Mary De Liguori parish in Magallanes, I came to know about a household help who committed to donate P500 a month for 10 months. I was a bit surprised because her kind does not receive so big a salary (only about P3,000 per month). So, I called her to ask about her generosity. She said, “Maliit po yun kumpara sa grasyang makukuha ko bilang kaparte ng pagpapagawa ng isang simbahan, kung saan maraming mabibinyagan, ikakasal, magsisimba at magkukumpisal. Marami pong maliligtas kapag nagawa na po yung simbahan.”(My donation is really not that big compared to the benefit we would receive once the church had been constructed. Many will be baptized, married, converted and saved.) She sees the benefit of her giving more than what she would give up. Giving for her is not a loss but an opportunity to help and save others. She may have given much less compared to other donors, but she gave a lot of heart and goodness together with her relatively few hundreds. But we know that as far as God is concerned, she gave more! Fr. Benny Tuazon REFLECTION QUESTION: When you give, what thoughts go with your giving? Lord Jesus, teach me to give with a generous heart, unmindful of what I am giving up and more concerned with the benefits of my giving. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
