Praying for you, Bo Sanchez 4 February Friday TODAY'S READINGS: DIDACHE | COMPANION | SABBATH DIDACHE   just like me   Let mutual love continue. – Hebrews 13:1   Paulo Coehlo, a famous Brazilian author, wrote about love in his book, The Zahir. Suppose there are two firemen who went into a forest to put out a small fire. Afterward, when they emerge and go over to a stream, the face of one is all smeared with black, while the other man’s face is completely clean. Which of the two will wash his face? Normally, we would say: the one with the dirty face. Coehlo disagrees. He thinks the one with the dirty face will look at the other man and assume that he is looking at him. Oddly enough, the man with the clean face will see his colleague covered in grime and will think his face is dirty, too, and will need a wash. Too often we mistake our loved ones to be an extension of ourselves. We fail to recognize them for who and what they are. Remember the scripts? You are my refuge. You have a beautiful soul. And when we find out that the other is just as flawed as we are, we leave them and the relationship crashes.Red Cerrer (redcer@yahoo.com)   REFLECTION: True love happens when we have found our life purpose. It is certain, then, that when we entertain anyone, we are entertaining not just angels but God Himself. This should be a sobering thought as we reflect upon the way we speak about one another and treat one another! Let us seek to recognize the face of Jesus in all whom we meet so that we will never be guilty of rejecting God or failing to respect His presence in our lives through the ministry of our neighbor.   Hebrews 13:1-8 1 Let brotherly love continue. 2 Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels. 3 Be mindful of prisoners as if sharing their imprisonment, and of the ill-treated as of yourselves, for you also are in the body. 4 Let marriage be honored among all and the marriage bed be kept undefiled, for God will judge the immoral and  adulterers. 5 Let your life be free from love of money but be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never forsake you or abandon you.” 6 Thus we may say with confidence: “The Lord is my helper, [and] I will not be afraid. (R)   G O S P E L   This story goes to show how jealousy can lead to very evil actions. Herodias’ actions have nothing redemptive in them – they are purely evil. This reminds us to be careful of tolerating sin in our lives. The problem here began with lust – Herodias transferring her affections from Philip to Herod. In tolerating her first affection for Herod she has been led by the devil down a path from where it is very difficult to turn – namely murder! Let us never allow this to happen to us.   ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Blessed are they who have kept the word with a generous heart, and yield a harvest through perseverance. R: Alleluia, alleluia   Mark 6:14-29 14 King Herod heard about Jesus, for his fame had become widespread, and people were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him.” 15 Others were saying, “He is Elijah”; still others, “He is a prophet like any of the prophets.” 16 But when Herod learned of it, he said, “It is John whom I beheaded. He has been raised up.” 17 Herod was the one who had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. 18 John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” 19 Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so. 20 Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. 21 She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee. 22 Herodias’s own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you.” 23 He even swore many things to her, “I will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my kingdom.” 24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 The girl hurried back to the king’s presence and made her request, “I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” 26 The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her. 27 So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison. 28 He brought in the head on a platter and gave it to the girl. Ghosts are spirits. I believe in the existence of spirits; therefore, I believe in ghosts. But, again, I have yet to see one. In today’s Gospel, King Herod saw his ghost in the person of John the Baptist. Victim of his own foolish pride — for he did not want to take back the oath he swore to Herodias’s daughter — Herod could not do any better than have the Baptist beheaded in prison. He did it even if he was convinced that John was a  holy man of God. We have ghosts, too. We commit mistakes. We blunder. We sin. We are too often victims of our own foolishness and pride. We create our own ghosts. And they are very real. Some people say they are not afraid of ghosts, but all people are disturbed by their ghosts. What is the antidote? First, acknowledge your mistake. Accepting guilt is the first step to courageously facing your ghost. Refusal to do so only makes your ghost run after you. Second, be sincerely sorry for your foolishness and pride that led you to commit such a blunder or sin. Befriending your ghost begins with the humility of saying sorry and meaning it well. Accepting your guilt without contrition only makes a monster out of your ghost. Third, amend and restitute. Resolve not to do again the wrong you have done, but this is never enough. You have to make it right. We all have ghosts in life. Many of them come from our past. They are parts of who we are. But there is much reason to befriend them and grow unto the person we are meant to be: sinners yet loved. Charles Dickenson’s A Christmas Story tells about three ghosts: the ghost of the distant past, of the present, and of the future. The main character of the story went through a lot of shuddering experiences, but in the end befriended his ghosts. When the story closes, he was a very much different man — the best he could ever be. Fr. Bobby Titco   Reflection Question: What are my ghosts? How should I befriend them?   O God, no one is perfect but You alone. I confess my guilt: I sin, I make mistakes, I commit blunders. I can be too foolish and proud that I myself create the ghosts I ran away from in fear. Forgive me and heal me. Help me amend my life and set aright whatever and whoever I have wronged. Praying for you, Bo Sanchez 3 February Thursday TODAY'S READINGS: DIDACHE | COMPANION | SABBATH DIDACHE   REAL HORROR STORIES   They drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. – Mark 6:13   Exorcism: Encounter with the Paranormal and the Occult by Fr. Jocis Syquia and An Exorcist Tells His Story by Fr. Gabriele Amorth sound like scary books, right? While you can’t interest me to read a horror story or watch a horror movie even if you give me a prize, I devoured those two books. After reading Fr. Jocis’ book, I went on to read Fr. Amorth’s book. The two books didn’t scare me as I felt the love and power of God even as the priests told of real horror stories. Fr. Amorth wrote something that struck me when he said that many priests and bishops are ignorant about exorcism and have therefore not exercised what is part of their office when they were ordained. The miracles that the Apostles wrought during their time as mentioned in today’s verse could still happen and are still happening in our time. Let us pray that the clergy, as well as all of us lay people, have faith to believe and exercise the miracle-working power of God.Joy Sosoban (jsosoban@gmail.com)   REFLECTION: “These signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will drive out demons, they will speak new languages…. In fact, it is more powerful than all of the blood in the world put together. Why? Let us always remember that we have been redeemed by the blood of Jesus, and thus avail of its power when tempted by sin. (R)   G O S P E L   The Feast of St. Blasé is one where traditionally the priest blesses the throats of those who desire it, praying to ward off any sickness of the throat such as flu or pneumonia. This Feast falls in the middle of the cold Northern Hemisphere winter. Let us modify things a little and pray for the deliverance from all illnesses and sicknesses and ask Blasé to intercede for us in this regard.   ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia The Kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the Gospel. As expected in a mission-sending event, Jesus gives a list of instructions to the Twelve. Let us review the list. Jesus instructed the Twelve not to take anything for the journey except a walking stick — no food, sleeping bags, extra clothing, or cash. Sandals were all they were told to wear, and if they were not welcomed in a particular place, they should leave that place while shaking the dust off their feet. They were also directed not to move from house to house for lodging. Quite a list of things to remember carefully! But is there something we are missing here? Jesus did not tell the Twelve what they were to preach about! Nothing before Mark 6:7-13 and neither is there anything about it after. It was only when the Twelve returned from their missionary assignment do we come to know what they preached about — the need for repentance. St. Francis of Assisi is said to have had the practice of sending his disciples on a mission each day with this instruction: “Go and preach the Good News. Talk if necessary.” Quite an unusual instruction to preachers, but that is precisely the secret of the best preaching. The absence of words is not the absence of message. When words are not present, the messenger himself becomes the message. By not telling the Twelve the explicit message of their preaching, Jesus seems to be instructing them that, first and foremost, they themselves are the “words” that would carry out His message to the ends of the world. By their detachment from material things, conveniences and comforts, power and prestige, the Twelve would give witness to the people that they are men dedicated to God. By following His list of instructions to them, the Twelve were to become the outward signs of God’s kingdom. Are those things present in our lives? If yes, then what is absent in our preaching? Fr. Bobby Titco   Reflection Question: Do you have too much comforts in your life such that you obscure the message of Jesus that is you?   Free me, O Lord, from all my attachments and leave me with only what is necessary in my mission to preach Your Kingdom. Praying for you, Bo Sanchez 2 February Wednesday TODAY'S READINGS: DIDACHE | COMPANION | SABBATH DIDACHE   Feast of the Presentation of the Lord   My High Priest   Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested. – Hebrews 2:18   “Christ died for you.” I’ve heard this often from speakers in seminars I’ve attended. I’ve heard this also countless times from priests during their sermons. But what does it really mean? I didn’t get it. But during the lowest points in my life — when I owed millions due to a failed business venture and I lost my sense of direction and purpose — the same words took on a totally different dimension. You see, when I wanted to end my life because I felt like a total failure, I heard Christ whispering to me, “Don’t give up. Don’t lose hope. This is not the end. There is still much more in store for you.” He wanted me to know that such darkness can never be the end because He showed me that there is so much more to life. Christ is truly the high priest of my life. He didn’t merely die for me… He lived His life for me.Orange Garcia (orange_garcia@hotmail.com)   REFLECTION: As gold is refined through fire, Christ melts all sense of hopelessness and despair in our lives.  What is Christ whispering to you right now?   Lord, make my eyes see and my ears hear so that I may know that there is always more to life.     Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top COMPANION   1st READING   Purification is a part of every Christian’s life. We are all sinners and have sullied our lives by giving in to temptations to sin. The good news is that we do not have to be resigned to a life of impurity or carrying with us the consequences of our sins forever. We can be purified from sin and its effects. This is a long and difficult process, but it has been made possible through the obedience and holiness of Christ. It is time for us to accept the challenge and surrender our lives to be purified by the salvific work and grace of Jesus.   Malachi 3:1-4 1 Thus says the Lord God: Lo, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me; and suddenly there will come to the temple the LORD whom you seek, and the messenger of the covenant whom you desire. The LORD of hosts; he is the king of glory. (R)   2nd READING   Jesus is one of us in all things but sin in that He took on our human nature. In the Incarnation, He redeems it through His life of obedience to the will of His and our Father in heaven. We are all invited to share in His relationship with the Father – this is an incredible privilege and we should do all that we can to grow in relationship with both Jesus and our Father in heaven.   Hebrews 2:14-18 14 Since the children share in blood and flesh, he likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life. 16 Surely he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham; 17 therefore, he had to become like his brothers in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.   G O S P E L   Simeon and Anna give witness to the identity of Jesus. They are part of the contextual evidence as to the perceived identity of Jesus as His life begins. We are reminded through them that the Jews had been expecting a Messiah. We believe that wait is over (the Jews are still waiting!). In reflecting upon their prophecies, we discover something of what it means to personalize our faith relationship with God. It is not for anyone to tell us what our relationship with God must be but for each of us to grow into relationship with God as we respond to His call.   ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia A light of revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel. She was advanced in years, having lived seven years with her husband after her marriage, 37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four. Who can say with all sincerity that he or she is ready to die? It’s difficult to find such a person, isn’t it? We find one in today’s Gospel. Simeon is a picture of a fulfilled man. He desires for nothing more, waits for nothing more, and prays for nothing more. He is ready and willing to go from this life to the next. Why? First, Simeon desires for nothing more because he already received what he desires most. His “eyes have seen the salvation which (God) has prepared for all nations to see, a light to enlighten the Gentiles, and the glory of Israel.” Simeon desired for Jesus, the Savior, the Light and the Glory. Now that he has set his eyes on Him, he is complete. Second, Simeon waits for nothing more because he trusted in God’s promise to him that he will not see death before he sets his eyes on the Savior. Now that the promise is fulfilled, what else should Simeon wait for? Jesus has arrived not only in the general sense of the word “arrive,” but also in its particular meaning as Jesus comes into the life of Simeon. Third, Simeon prays for nothing more because his prayer has already been granted. He has seen Jesus; he has seen peace. Now, he can go in peace as a servant of Him whose promise he has trusted. What do we desire for? What do we wait for? What do we pray for? No one less than God can satisfy our desire. Nothing less than God’s fidelity to His word can bring about what we wait for. Nothing less than having the disposition of God’s servant can make us realize how God answers our prayers. Simeon teaches us what it means to be a fulfilled person. And only a truly fulfilled person is ready to leave this world so as to enter God’s kingdom. May the light of the candles we bring to Mass today to be blessed by the priest shed light upon our desire, our waiting and our prayer. Jesus Christ alone, who is the Light, can show us the truth about “the fulfilled person.”Fr.
