| HOLY WEDNESDAY GLORIOUS ENDING “ The Lord is my help, therefore I am not disgraced. I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame.” – Isaiah 50:7 I didn’t want to accept that my seven-month-old son was dying. I had been telling everybody how God was healing my son of his congenital heart condition. Everyone knew how much I’d been praying. Didn’t Jesus say that all you need is faith the size of a mustard seed to move mountains? Mine was as big as a watermelon so why was it not happening? Then one night, I realized that I was more concerned about my pride as a Christian rather than God’s glory. God is God and He answers our prayers as best suited to His plans, not ours. After months of struggling emotionally and mentally, I finally surrendered to His sovereignty and embraced His will. The next day, my son breathed his last as I cradled him in my arms and whispered to him to tell God how much I love Him when he sees Him. Nine years after his death, people still come up to me to tell me how much they’ve been touched by my story, which I shared during a televised Good Friday recollection. What I thought was a disgraceful ending, God was able to use to touch many people. It’s not what we do for Him that gives Him glory… it’s what He does through us that glorifies Him. Ronna Ledesma (ronnaledesma@email.com) 20 REFLECTION: If we can dictate to God how we want Him to answer our prayers, then He wouldn’t be God at all. Father, let Your will be done here on earth as it has been done already in heaven. Amen. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READINGin one year Continuing our reflection on service, we are led to realize that the immediate fruits of service in the Kingdom of God are not always apparent. That is, sometimes we may never see the fruits of our service. This should not be a source of discouragement or frustration but an opportunity to grow in faith and trust in God’s goodness. Trust in God is no different from trust in any other person except that we can be sure that He will not fail us. God’s timing may not always be the timing we desire but it is perfect. Isaiah 50:4-9 4 The Lord GOD has given me a well-trained tongue, that I might know how to speak to the weary a word that will rouse them. Morning after morning he opens my ear that I may hear; 5 and I have not rebelled, have not turned back. 6 I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting. 7 The Lord GOD is my help, therefore I am not disgraced; I have set my face like flint, knowing that I shall not be put to shame. 8 He is near who upholds my right; if anyone wishes to oppose me, let us appear together. Who disputes my right? Let him confront me. 9 See, the Lord GOD is my help; who will prove me wrong? P S A L M Psalms 69:8-10, 21-22, 31, 33-34 R: Lord, in your great love, answer me. 7 [8] For your sake I bear insult, and shame covers my face. 8 [9] I have become an outcast to my brothers, a stranger to my mother’s sons, 9 [10] because zeal for your house consumes me, and the insults of those who blaspheme you fall upon me. (R) 20 [21] Insult has broken my heart, and I am weak, I looked for sympathy, but there was none; for consoler, not one could I find. 21 [22] Rather they put gall in my food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink. (R) 30 [31] I will praise th e name of God in song, and I will glorify him with thanksgiving; 3 2 [ 3 3 ] “See, you lowly ones, and be glad; you who seek God, may your hearts be revived! 33 [34] For the LORD hears the poor, and his own who are in bonds he spurns not.” (R) G O S P E L As a final reflection on service, it is good to remind ourselves that whatever the will of God is for us, whether small or big, it is an essential part of God’s overall plan for each of us as individuals and all of us as a whole. None of us has the capacity to fully understand the will of God so we may as well give up trying to do that. Let us be satisfied with being faithful to each of the steps He calls us to make and trust that at the end of the journey we will be right where He wants us to be – with Him in heaven forever! That sounds a good enough goal to me. VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL Hail to you, our King; you alone are compassionate with our errors. Matthew 26:14-25 14 One of the Twelve, who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, “What are you willing to give me if I hand him over to you?” They paid him thirty pieces of silver, 16 and from that time on he looked for an opportunity to hand him over. 17 On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the disciples approached Jesus and said, “Where do you want us to prepare for you to eat the Passover?” 18 He said, “Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The teacher says, “My appointed time draws near; in your house I shall celebrate the Passover with my disciples.” ’ ” 19 The disciples then did as Jesus had ordered, and prepared the Passover. 20 When it was evening, he reclined at table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, “Amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 Deeply distressed at this, they began to say to him one after another, “Surely it is not I, Lord?” 23 He said in reply, “He who has dipped his hand into the dish with me is the one who will betray me. 24 The Son of Man indeed goes, as it is written of him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. It would be better for that man if he had never been born.” 25 Then Judas, his betrayer, said in reply, “Surely it is not I, Rabbi?” He answered, “You have said so.” my reflections t h i n k : Let us be satisfied with being faithful to each of the steps He calls us to make and trust that at the end of the journey we will be right where He wants us to be – with Him in heaven forever! God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR 1 Chronicles 21-22 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | THE SUFFERING SERVANT The First Reading is the third of four servant songs. These songs in Isaiah point to Jesus as the “suffering Servant.” The servant was the “trusted envoy.” Deeply embedded in the psyche of the Israelites was the notion that the Messiah would come to save his people. He would overthrow the Roman forces and there would be a time of peace and security among the people. As Jesus’ life and ministry unfold, many see Him as the fulfillment of the messianic prophecies. Some, even up to this day, do not believe that Jesus is Messiah and so are still waiting for Him to come. In Old Testament history, Cyrus, the Persian military official, was one such messiah. King David, also believed by many in his time, was to be a messiah figure, too. Cyrus delivered Israel from Babylon but the servant would deliver the world from sin. There is stark contrast between the servant and the nation of Israel. The servant speaks to the weary assisting the weak. Israel is so proud of their successes and shuns the weak from their midst. The servant responds to the voice of God. His ear is open. Israel is not responsive to the voice of God. The servant is obedient while Israel is disobedient and turns away from the Lord in ignorance and rebellion. The servant gladly suffers all for the sake of the Lord. His punishment is the just reward for the sins of Israel. The servant trusts in the Lord, unlike Israel who puts hope in foreign nations not lifting their eyes to God who sustains. The servant trusts that God will vindicate him, for revenge belongs to God. We, too, are servants of the Lord God. Sometimes we suffer for the right cause. Sometimes we want to take revenge for the ingratitude shown to us. Nevertheless, the Lord is our hope. The suffering servant gives us an example of what it is to be a disciple. Morning by morning, our ears and eyes are to be open to His will in our lives. Every day is an opportunity to grow in our service to the Lord. Let us not grow weary of doing good. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL Reflection Question: Do I suffer for the Lord? How? Lord, let me be Your servant. Let me walk with You as the suffering servant. Amen.
