| HIGH -TECH or low-Tech? “Stop judging by appearances, but judge justly.“ – John 7:24 I lost my mobile phone so I borrowed an old phone that my husband, Ed, no longer used. I wasn’t sure if the phone had a roaming feature so I went into a store to inquire. The salesman said, “Nope, that phone is low-tech.” Ready to buy the phone I needed, I asked him for a high-tech one. He pointed at the phones in a glass case and attended to another customer. The guy snubbed me! When I told Ed what happened, he said, “Maybe he thought you couldn’t afford the expensive one.” Aside from carrying a cheap phone, I was wearing an old T-shirt and denims. I bought the phone anyway but from another store with a salesman who apparently didn’t judge me by how I looked. A few months after, we were at a black-tie event. We happened to be seated next to one of the richest men in the Philippines. I noticed we had the same phone. I told him, for a man of his stature, I thought he should have a much more expensive phone. But he said, “All I need is a phone with a roaming feature — like yours.” Yes, as the Gospel today reminds us, we should be careful not to judge people by their appearance.Cynthia Santiago (boses2go@gmail.com) 8 REFLECTION: What first comes to your mind when you look at the way people dress? Lord, grant that I may see what’s good in every person I meet today. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The unrighteous may prevail in their intentions in this world but they will not enter the Kingdom of Heaven if they persist in their sins. The reality of the world is that the human will directs much of the activity and oftentimes human intentions are not the will of God. God has given us free will so evil can occur, however, it is confined to the world and cannot enter heaven. The righteous person acts righteously to prepare him or her self for eternal life with God in heaven. There is another option but it does not bear investigating! Wisdom 2:1, 12-22 1 The wicked said among themselves, thinking not aright: 12 “Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training. 13 He professes to have knowledge of God and styles himself a child of the LORD. 14 To us he is the censure of our thoughts; merely to see him is a hardship for us, 15 because his life is not like other men’s, and different are his ways. 16 He judges us debased; he holds aloof from our paths as from things impure. He calls blest the destiny of the just and boasts that God is his Father. 17 Let us see whether his words be true; let us find out what will happen to him. 18 For if the just one be the son of God, he will defend him and deliver him from the hand of his foes. 19 With revilement and torture let us put him to the test that we may have proof of his gentleness and try his patience. 20 Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him.” 21 These were their thoughts, but they erred; for their wickedness blinded them, 22 and they knew not the hidden counsels of God; neither did they count on a recompense of holiness nor discern the innocent souls’ reward. P S A L Min one year Psalms 34:17-18, 19-20, 21, 23 R: The Lord is close to the brokenhearted. 16 [17] The LORD confronts the evildoers, to destroy remembrance of them from the earth. 17 [18] When the just cry out, the LORD hears them, and from all their distress he rescues them. (R) 18 [19] The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves. 19 [20] Many are the troubles of the just man, but out of them all the LORD delivers him. (R) 20 [21] He watches over all his bones; not one of them shall be broken. 22 [23] The LORD redeems the lives of his servants; no one incurs guilt who takes refuge in him. (R) G O S P E L Many conspired to be the downfall of Jesus but they all failed until the appointed time of His death came. It is through the death and resurrection of Jesus that salvation for us is wrought. The conspirators thought that the death of Jesus would bring closure to their intentions. Little did they know that Jesus’ death is merely the beginning or launching pad for His final triumph over sin and death itself! VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL One does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God. John 7:1-2, 10, 25-30 1 Jesus moved about within Galilee; but he did not wish to travel in Judea, because the Jews were trying to kill him. 2 But the Jewish feast of Tabernacles was near. 10 But when his brothers had gone up to the feast, he himself also went up, not openly but as it were in secret. 25 Some of the inhabitants of Jerusalem said, “Is he not the one they are trying to kill? 26 And look, he is speaking openly and they say nothing to him. Could the authorities have realized that he is the Messiah? 27 But we know where he is from. When the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.” 28 So Jesus cried out in the temple area as he was teaching and said, “You know me and also know where I am from. Yet I did not come on my own, but the one who sent me, whom you do not know, is true. 29 I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.” 30 So they tried to arrest him, but no one laid a hand upon him, because his hour had not yet come. my reflections t h i n k : The righteous person acts righteously to prepare him or her self for eternal life with God in heaven. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR 2 Kings 17-20 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | THE LIGHT OF TRUTH There were many feasts celebrated in the history of the Jewish people. The Feast of Tabernacles is one. This feast, commemorated in September and October, celebrated the completion of the harvest. It was the original celebration of thanksgiving to God for His protection during their desert wanderings. As the disciples went to Jerusalem to observe the feast, Jesus said He would not go. However, John tells us that He did, yet secretly. One could almost feel the tension rising as we read the stories of the last day of Jesus in Jerusalem, leading up to His death. Jesus is considered as a madman. He mentions that He has been sent. He is always aware of the hour that is to come. He speaks of God as His Father and He presents Himself as the Christ. The crowd finds this too hard to accept and is willing to arrest and hand Him over to the authorities. A constant refrain we read in the Gospel of John is that the hour had not yet come. However, Jesus always stays on the side of the truth, no matter how much the crowds persuade Him not to. There will be times in our life when we need to stick to the truth despite having to endure setbacks and criticisms. We would be considered madmen for the sake of Jesus. Those closest to us would seek to challenge us and draw us away from the Lord and His will in our life. We must not be afraid to stand alongside the truth no matter what the price. For Jesus, it was death — death on the Cross. The disciple will always be where His master is. Lent is the time where we consider our relationship with Jesus again. We are in a time of renewal in the Lord. Are we willing to stand up for the truth and stand with Jesus? Are we willing to be as Francis of Assisi would say, “fools for Christ”? As we remember the Jews who celebrated the Feast of Tabernacles thanking God for the blessing of His provision, let us thank God that He is always on our side. The Spirit is the Advocate, the One who defends those who live with Jesus, the Way, the Truth and the Life. Fr. Brian Steele, MGL Reflection Question: Where and to whom is Jesus calling me to stand up for the truth? Lord, despite the trials that may come my way and the temptation to quit, I will always seek to live my life in the light of Your truth. Amen.
