| Dear Lordie, Be God?s blessing to the world this Monday!
Praying for you,

| PASS YOUR PAPERS! “With what shall I come before the Lord and bow before God most high?” – Micah 6:6 “Five... four... three... two... one! Pass your papers!” That was panic time for me during school exams. I’m not a fast thinker so I’d normally be unable to answer all the questions on my test papers. With panic came the fear of failure, especially when I went to class unprepared. Agonizing dread over the grade I was going to get followed this. And sometimes, it turned to regret. You know, the usual, “I wish I studied more.” Reading the verse above, I realize that life is like that. Our time here on earth is limited and our journey is a long learning process. But what is it that we need to learn? I have heard many times that we are here to learn how to love; that when we meet our Maker, He will not ask us how much we acquired while we were living, but how much we loved. In the movie Ghost, the spirit of Sam tells Molly, “It’s amazing, Molly. The love you feel inside... it’s the only thing you take with you.” When God gives us the countdown and says, “Pass your papers!” may each of us be confident that we would pass the test with flying colors. Nova Arias (nova.svp@gmail.com) REFLECTION: There is enough love going around in the world for each one of us. How much do you give away? Lord Jesus, teach us how to love the way You do. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING God reminds the people of all that He has done for them and thus He has been the source of any prosperity that any of them has achieved. Now He wants to see them use that prosperity to benefit those who need it, not against them. If the rich can keep the poor, poor, they will maintain a certain power over them. This is not pleasing to God who wants them to use their blessings to improve the life of the poor. Micah 6:1-4, 6-8 1 Hear, then, what the LORD says: Arise, present your plea before the mountains, and let the hills hear your voice! 2 Hear, O mountains, the plea of the LORD, pay attention, O foundations of the earth! For the LORD has a plea against his people, and he enters into trial with Israel. 3 O my people, what have I done to you, or how have I wearied you? Answer me! 4 For I brought you up from the land of Egypt, from the place of slavery I released you; and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. 6 With what shall I come before the LORD, and bow before God most high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with myriad streams of oil? Shall I give my first-born for my crime, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8 You have been told, O man, what is good, and what the LORD requires of you: Only to do right and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God. P S A L M Psalm 50:5-6, 8-9, 16bc-17, 21, 23 R: To the upright I will show the saving power of God. 5 “Gather my faithful ones before me, those who have made a covenant with me by sacrifice.” 6 And the heavens proclaim his justice; for God himself is the judge. (R) 8 “Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you, for your burnt offerings are before me always. 9 I take from your house no bullock, no goats out of your fold.” (R) 16 “Why do you recite my statutes, and profess my covenant with your mouth, 17 though you hate discipline and cast my words behind you?” (R) 21 “When you do these things, shall I be deaf to it? Or do you think that I am like yourself? I will correct you by drawing them up before your eyes. 23 He that offers praise as a sacrifice glorifies me; and to him that goes the right way I will show the salvation of God.” (R) G O S P E L One of the problem with signs is that those who seek them regularly are rarely satisfied with one. It becomes ridiculous as one seeks signs to confirm the previous sign. Faith is all about entrusting our lives to God. The only sign we need is exactly what Jesus tells us — the sign of Jonah, which is repentance. The very fact that God is willing to forgive our sins ought to be sign enough to us that He loves us and acts for our welfare. Matthew 12:38-42 38 Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 He said to them in reply, “An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 40 Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights, so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights. 41 At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and there is something greater than Jonah here. 42 At the judgment the queen of the south will arise with this generation and condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and there is something greater than Solomon here.” Nehemiah 10-13 my reflections t h i n k : The very fact that God is willing to forgive our sins ought to be sign enough to us that He loves us and acts for our welfare. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Nehemiah 10-13 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | WHY INVOKE THE IMAGE OF JONAH? Most scholars agree that there is an element of the apocryphal in the story of Jonah and the whale. Is it really possible for a whale to consume a person and then spew them out on the shore later? Well, regardless of the veracity of this story, Jesus uses it to emphasize that no matter how fantastic the story of Jonah and the whale is, even more amazing is the reality the people are experiencing in the coming of the Kingdom of God into their lives through the miracles and preaching of Jesus. The wisdom of Solomon is not apocryphal and it drew visits from royalty coming from east and west. The wisdom of God is being manifest in the words of Jesus in a way that is far greater than through Solomon. For example, Jesus actually speaks of the forgiveness of sins for those who repent. This is part of the wisdom of God for our salvation. Yes, I say wisdom, because it is only through God’s reasoning that anyone could have arrived at the plan of salvation that Jesus implements. More truthfully, we should be speaking of the merciful wisdom of God. We are all disciples of Jesus and as such, we need to learn that the grace of God that manifests itself in our lives is God’s wisdom and plan for us and the world today. This wisdom has the same roots as that at work in Jesus’ time, but today’s society is different and God adjusts its expression in order to suit our present needs. We must learn to accept the grace of God as it is given us and not expect God to do things the same way He has done in the past. Yes, the end result is the same, but the means to achieve it is necessarily different due to the changing needs of the people today. We must not be afraid of innovation and be like the wise scribe who is able to draw things from his storehouse — things both new and old. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL Reflection Question: Do I tend to yearn for the days when faith seemed simpler and God was more active? If so, then it is unlikely you will ever be satisfied with your faith. Jesus, help me to realize that You are working in the world today just as actively as You had been in the past. Help me to discern what it is You are doing so that I will be able to participate in it to the best of my ability.
