WHEN THE GENTLE ME EXPLODES

“Whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment.” – Matthew 5:22

In my family, expressing one’s anger is not an ordinary thing. We were raised up in a gentle environment. So it’s no wonder that we all grew up soft-spoken.
But anger is a human emotion that visits us now and then. I had (and still have) my own share, and like bombs they explode when I try to keep it to myself for long.
Once, I had a difficult group mate in a class project. I was supposed to be the leader and had to facilitate the completion of the project. But her behavior was not helping the group — she’d come late or not at all to our meetings, and when she did, she’d question everything.
It came to the point that I could no longer contain my anger and I exploded. She was shocked, as was the rest of the group. I, too, was shocked that I could be that angry.
It was a most excruciating weekend for me. I couldn’t eat and sleep well. But thank God, at that time I had friends who helped me process my feelings. And thank God, too, we were in a retreat setting that weekend and I had time to confess it. Most of all, I was able to say, “Peace!” to the object of my anger. Tess V. Atienza (svp_tvatienza@yahoo.com)
14
REFLECTION:
How do you handle your anger?

Lord, teach me how to handle the negative emotions in my life. Grant me patience, gentleness and compassion.

St. Albert Chmielowski, pray for us.

1ST READING

God makes Himself present to us in a myriad of ways. This story tells us not to lock God into doing things the way we might want or expect Him to act. We need to allow God to be God. In that way He will be able to direct the work of the Gospel according to His will rather than our own limited understanding and capacities. The Gospel will be better served if we let God direct where we go and what we do.

1 Kings 18:41-46
41 Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” 42 So Ahab went up to eat and drink, while Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, crouched down to the earth, and put his head between his knees. 43 “Climb up and look out to sea,” he directed his servant, who went up and looked, but reported, “There is nothing.” Seven times he said, “Go look again!” 44 And the seventh time the youth reported, “There is a cloud as small as a man’s hand rising from the sea.” Elijah said, “Go and say to Ahab, ‘Harness up and leave the mountain before the rain stops you.’” 45 In a trice, the sky grew dark with clouds and wind, and a heavy rain fell. Ahab mounted his chariot and made for Jezreel. 46 But the hand of the Lord was on Elijah, who girded up his clothing and ran before Ahab as far as the approaches to Jezreel.

Psalm 65:10, 11, 12-13
R: It is right to praise you in Zion, O God.
9 [10] You have visited the land and watered it; greatly have you enriched it. God’s watercourses are filled; you have prepared the grain. (R) 10 [11] Thus have you prepared the land: drenching its furrows, breaking up its clods, softening it with showers, blessing its yield. (R) 11 [12] You have crowned the year with your bounty, and your paths overflow with a rich harvest; 12 [13] The untilled meadows overflow with it, and rejoicing clothes the hills. (R)

GOSPEL

Relationships have been and always will be important for the proclamation of the Gospel. God is a relational God and we are relational people. It is important to remember this when we are working together in the service of the Gospel. Let us never forget that we will bear better fruit if we truly work together and not against one another.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
I give you a new commandment: Love one another as I have loved you.

Matthew 5:20-26
20 Jesus said to his disciples: “I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the Kingdom of heaven. 21 “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raqa,’ will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna. 23 Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, 24 leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him. Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. 26 Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.”

think: Let us never forget that we will bear better fruit if we truly work together and not against one another.

ANGER management

Jesus devoted a part of His teaching on anger. He saw it as an essential part of the sin of killing. He wanted to attack the problem at its root. Therefore, addressing anger would prevent a lot of killings.
Anger per se is a feeling and therefore not a sin. We feel angry because we disagree with an act that is done. We are angry because we had been offended or violated. A lot of reasons can trigger our anger. If we express our anger without resulting in any harm to ourselves or to others, it is but a natural human reaction. But if it brings harm to anyone, including oneself, it is a totally different matter and in many cases could even lead to killing oneself or another.
Before anger ends in killing or harming anyone, the Lord admonishes us to address our anger by trying to immediately reconcile our differences. He went as far as making one unworthy of making any offering or worship if he is not reconciled with his enemies. This gives us the message that forgiveness of others is a prerequisite to a good relationship with God. In the Lord’s Prayer, it is more explicit: “Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.” Meaning, we should not ask forgiveness from God if we are not willing to forgive others.
Jesus also added the process one will go through if we do not let the courts decide on our case. He has nothing against courts of law, but even legal officers at present encourage out-of-court settlements. It not only prevents clogging of cases in the courts but also saves time, effort and  money of the persons involved. Settlement also brings more healing and satisfaction because the persons involved are the ones who agree on the terms.
We must forgive not only seven times but seventy times seven times. Yes, we should be able to express our anger, but it should not control us. And we should not let our anger linger. We must end the day at peace with everyone in anticipation of a good day ahead! Fr. Benny Tuazon

REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Is there anyone you’re not at peace with? How do you express and handle your anger?

Lord Jesus, thank You for forgiving me every time I offend You. May I find the grace, too, to forgive those who have wronged me.

The Ultimate Fulfillment

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” – Matthew 15:17

Kids would say, “When I grow up, I want to be….” How frustrating it is on my part because I didn’t grow up. I remained vertically challenged (a euphemism for “shorty”).
Kidding aside, I wanted to become:
A teacher, to teach lessons to students.
A lawyer, to defend the underprivileged.
A priest, to lead people to the Lord.
A soldier, to fight for the nation’s sovereignty.
A doctor, to heal people.
Well, nothing above was fulfilled. Frustration set in. Then Jesus came to the rescue. He is the Ultimate Fulfillment.
I didn’t become a teacher but today I teach people godly life skills. I didn’t become a lawyer but today I spread the Law of Love. I didn’t become a priest but today I am spiritual dad to the youth! I didn’t become a soldier but today I defend the faith and rescue souls for the Lord. I didn’t become a doctor but today I heal broken hearts and lives only in the name and grace of Jesus!
I didn’t become anything yet I became everything. For only Jesus fulfills.
Solo Dios basta. God alone is enough. Obet Cabrillas (kpreacherobet@gmail.com)

1ST READING

Elijah is confronted with what must have been a daunting task – he is all alone in taking on the numerous prophets of Baal. Elijah goes straight into the battle and tackles the problem head-on. We will often be confronted with challenges and difficulties in our lives. Let us pray for the grace of God to be more like Elijah in believing in our capacity to defeat them.

1 Kings 18:20-39
20 Ahab sent to all the children of Israel and had the prophets assemble on Mount Carmel. 21 Elijah appealed to all the people and said, “How long will you straddle the issue? If the Lord is God, follow him; if Baal, follow him.” The people, however, did not answer him. 22 So Elijah said to the people, “I am the only surviving prophet of the Lord, and there are four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal. 23 Give us two young bulls. Let them choose one, cut it into pieces, and place it on the wood, but start no fire. I shall prepare the other and place it on the wood, but shall start no fire. 24 You shall call on your Gods, and I will call on the Lord. The God who answers with fire is God.” All the people answered, “Agreed!” 25 Elijah then said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one young bull and prepare it first, for there are more of you. Call upon your Gods, but do not start the fire.” 26 Taking the young bull that was turned over to them, they prepared it and called on Baal from morning to noon, saying, “Answer us, Baal!” But there was no sound, and no one answering. And they hopped around the altar they had prepared. 27 When it was noon, Elijah taunted them “Call louder, for he is a God and may be meditating, or may have retired, or may be on a journey. Perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.” 28 They called out louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until blood gushed over them. 29 Noon passed and they remained in a prophetic state until the time for offering sacrifice. But there was not a sound; no one answered, and no one was listening. 30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” When the people had done so, he repaired the altar of the Lord that had been destroyed. 31 He took twelve stones, for the number of tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the Lord had said, “Your name shall be Israel.” 32 He built an altar in honor of the Lord with the stones, and made a trench around the altar large enough for two measures of grain. 33 When he had arranged the wood, he cut up the young bull and laid it on the wood. 34 “Fill four jars with water,” he said, “and pour it over the burnt offering and over the wood.” “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again. “Do it a third time,” he said, and they did it a third time. 35 The water flowed around the altar, and the trench was filled  water. 36 At the time for offering sacrifice, the prophet Elijah came forward and said, “Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things by your command. 37 Answer me, Lord! Answer me, that this people may know that you, Lord, are God and that you have brought them back to their senses.” 38 The Lord’s fire came down and consumed the burnt offering, wood, stones, and dust, and it lapped up the water in the trench. 39 Seeing this, all the people fell prostrate and said, “The Lord is God! The Lord is God!”

R: Keep me safe, O God; you are my hope.
1 Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge; 2 I say to the Lord, “My Lord are you.” (R) 4 They multiply their sorrows who court other gods. Blood libations to them I will not pour out, nor will I take their names upon my lips. (R) 5 O Lord, my allotted portion and my cup, you it is who hold fast my lot. 8 I set the Lord ever before me; with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed. (R) 11 You will show me the path to life, fullness of joys in your presence, the delights at your right hand forever. (R)

GOSPEL

Jesus comes to bring the fullness of the revelation of God’s love for us and part of this is fulfilling the Law. In doing this, Jesus does not abolish it but places it before us as a challenge to fulfill as well. Ultimately, the Law is all about loving God and our neighbor. Let us pray that we will grow in our capacity to do this every day.

I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. 18 Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place. 19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the Kingdom of heaven.”

SABBATH

Still At Work

Jesus stresses the importance and strength of the commandments of God in this Gospel. If we want to be great in His Kingdom, we should do what God has commanded us to do. To break them would make us least in the same Kingdom. In Filipino we have a saying, “Itaga mo sa bato!” to signify that nothing and no one can stop us from realizing what we intend to do.
God’s Word has been fulfilled — from the invitation to Mary to become the Mother of the Son of God, to Jesus’ Incarnation, to the gathering of the Twelve Apostles, and subsequently the conversion of Saint Paul and the life of commitment by the saints and martyrs. St. Anthony of Padua, whose memorial we celebrate today, was part of this whole entourage of living witnesses to the realization of God’s Word. He was known for his eloquence, fervor and learning. In Him, the Word of God is fulfilled even just in hearing.
It is embarrassing but I have to admit that before my ordination, I doubted if I would be able to sustain my priesthood. Living a life of obedience, celibacy and simplicity is not easy especially in a very secular world. Priesthood is a life of contradiction in a world obsessed with riches, power and fame. I went through a lot of challenges and trials. There were downs, yes, but not enough for me to call it quits. Now, I am on my 19th year in the ministry and have so many responsibilities. How did this happen?
I realized it was not I but God. I learned that God, through my cooperation, has guided and supported me all these years. My constant daily “yes” to Him was enough for Him to realize His call to me. Indeed, He was true to His promise that every single word of His will be brought to fulfillment. Though He uttered, “It is finished!” while hanging on the cross, His Spirit continues to inspire everyone to witness to God’s commands. In every Eucharistic celebration, where His death on the cross continues in a bloodless manner, God works to save us — in fulfillment of His promise. Fr. Benny Tuazon

REFLECTION QUESTION: How is God working in your life right now? And how are you fulfilling your own commitments to Him?

Father in heaven, give me the grace to fulfill my commitments to You as You are faithful in Your promises to me.

SHINE!

You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. – Matthew 5:14

There’s something about people who are at peace with God that makes them shine. Their joyful countenance, maybe? Their gentle manner of speaking? Their kindness? Whatever it is, they simply radiate. You can easily spot them from those who wear their weary heart on their sleeve.
Now, imagine how much brighter their light shines when they speak about their love for God. They must be bursting like firecrackers brightening the night sky. To be surrounded by them makes me feel loved, and they constantly open my eyes to the beauty of life and the magnificence of the Almighty.
Matthew 15:16 says that our “light must shine before others.” And this tells us that we each have a light within us that needs to be switched on. How? By doing good deeds so that others may glorify our heavenly Father (Matthew 15:16). It isn’t too hard to do because all of us were created good.
It is not enough that we be merely shone upon. I challenge you to shine! Nova Arias (nova.svp@gmail.com)

REFLECTION:
What good deed can I joyfully do today?

Jesus, teach me to be as good as You.I want to shine with You.

1ST READING

Generosity in the face of deprivation is even more generous when you think about it. This is the sort of reflection that we should make once in a while so as to open our hearts a little more in generosity. God has given His Son to us. Jesus gave His life for us. What are we giving in response to such incredible generosity?

1 Kings 17:7-16
7 The brook near where Elijah was hiding ran dry, because no rain had fallen in the land. 8 So the Lord said to Elijah: 9 “Move on to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. I have designated a widow there to provide for you.” 10 He left and went to Zarephath. As he arrived at the entrance of the city, a widow was gathering sticks there; he called out to her, “Please bring me a small cupful of water to drink.” 11 She left to get it, and he called out after her, “Please bring along a bit of bread.” 12 She answered, “As the Lord, your God, lives, I have nothing baked; there is only a handful of flour in my jar and a little oil in my jug. Just now I was collecting a couple of sticks, to go in and prepare something for myself and my son; when we have eaten it, we shall die.” 13 “Do not be afraid,” Elijah said to her. “Go and do as you propose. But first make me a little cake and bring it to me. Then you can prepare something for yourself and your son. 14 For the Lord, the God of Israel, says, ‘The jar of flour shall not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, until the day when the Lord sends rain upon the earth.’ ” 15 She left and did as Elijah had said. She was able to eat for a year, and he and her son as well; 16 the jar of flour did not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry,
as the Lord had foretold through Elijah.

Psalm 4:2-3, 4-5, 7-8
R: Lord, let your face shine on us.
1 [2] When I call, answer me, O my just God, you who relieve me when I am in distress; have pity on me, and hear my prayer! 2 [3] Men of rank, how long will you be dull of heart? Why do you love what is vain and seek after falsehood? (R) 3 [4] Know that the Lord does wonders for his faithful one; the Lord will hear me when I call upon him. 4 [5] Tremble, and sin not; reflect, upon your beds, in silence. (R) 6 [7] O Lord, let the light of your countenance shine upon us! 7 [8] You put gladness into my heart, more than when grain and wine abound. (R)

GOSPEL

Salt gives flavor to all sorts of dishes and if you take it out, the dish would taste terrible. The same is true of our lives if we fail to incorporate the Gospel in it. We cannot be disciples of Jesus unless we live the Gospel fully every day. This is the challenge we face for the rest of our lives. Let us pray that we will all be up to the task!

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Let your light shine before others that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.

Matthew 5:13-16
13 Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. 14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. 16 Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

USE TO PRODUCE

No doubt this teaching was meant to encourage the Apostles to go and persevere in their mission. Jesus knew the challenges they will be facing in practicing their faith. Jesus not only reminded them of what they have but also the responsibility for having them. The analogy on the role of the salt and the light tendered His commissioning of the Apostles to the ministry. After hearing Jesus preach and seeing His deeds for some time, they were now ready to do as Jesus did.
We remember our baptism — our moment of commissioning. Though we were still children, our parents and godparents were given the responsibilities to teach and train us in the faith. We were expected to become followers of Jesus. But we were not to remain passive followers and believers. We have to share our faith. At the proper time, we have to witness to the faith and bear fruit for God. Thus, our membership in the family of God also entails concern for other members of the faith.
We can only do it by using everything God had given us. It is our duty to discover our God-given gifts and then use them for the service of the community. It would be unfortunate if the gifts given by God for a purpose would be left unused or kept to ourselves.
Once I had a friend who possessed a good singing voice. But he preferred not to use it because he did not want fame or recognition. He wanted to be humble. I believed he should use his gift rather than keep it. It was meant to be shared, not kept. But he chose to just keep it to himself. No amount of convincing and invitation could prevail over his decision to just humbly keep it. I do not know if it is a curse or coincidence, but one morning, he just lost his voice. We could not believe what happened. We could only empathize with his condition.
He took his fate painfully and sadly. Maybe, if he used his voice, it would not have happened. Or maybe his voice was meant to be lost. In any case, it was not wise to just have kept it. Fr. Benny Tuazon

REFLECTION QUESTION: Make an inventory of the gifts God has given you. How are you using each gift? How you use it is your gift to God.

Guide me, Lord, and help me discover the gifts You have blessed me with. Lead me as to where and how I should use them.
