| THE FRUIT OF PRAYER And his face appeared to them like the face of an angel. – Acts 6:15 The chapel at the Papal Nuncio in Manila is always immaculately maintained by nuns. But when Pope John Paul II stayed there during his visit, the nuns were in a quandary. They couldn’t clean while the Pope was out because all of them invariably went with him, and once they returned, the Pope was always praying before the Blessed Sacrament. They decided to solve the problem by waking up early despite their lack of sleep. The next day, at 4:00 in the morning, they opened the doors of the chapel... and found the Pope lying prostate before the altar, praying. I remember the glimpse I had of the Pope while he was in the pope mobile. He must have been tired from a whole day of activities but his face radiated peace. More than that, I felt his peace settle in me, as if I had been touched by the hand of God. We cannot give what we don’t have. To share the love of God, we have to bask in His love for us first. 23 REFLECTION: “The connecting branch to the vine is prayer. If that connection is there, then love is there, then joy is there, and we will be the sunshine of God’s love.” (Bl. Mother Teresa) “Come, Holy Spirit, guide me, protect me, clear out my mind so that I can pray.” (Bl. Mother Teresa). St. George, martyr, patron of England, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1ST READING Stephen the Deacon is a humble man seeking always to serve others and desiring to give his all in service. We also know that he is a fearless man of faith and that even the prospect of death will not make him silent. Let us ask him to intercede for us, so we will grow in our desire and capacity to be of service to our faith communities. Acts 6:8-15 8 Stephen, filled with grace and power, was working great wonders and signs among the people. 9 Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen, Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and people from Cilicia and Asia, came forward and debated with Stephen, 10 but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke. 11 Then they instigated some men to say, “We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.” 12 They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, accosted him, seized him, and brought him before the Sanhedrin. 13 They presented false witnesses who testified, “This man never stops saying things against this holy place and the law. 14 For we have heard him claim that this Jesus the Nazorean will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.” 15 All those who sat in the Sanhedrin looked intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel. P S A L M Psalm 119:23-24, 26-27, 29-30 R: Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord! 23 Though princes meet and talk against me, your servant meditates on your statutes. 24 Yes, your decrees are my delight; they are my counselors. (R) 26 I declared my ways, and you answered me; teach me your statutes. 27 Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous deeds. (R) 29 Remove from me the way of falsehood, and favor me with your law. 30 The way of truth I have chosen; I have set your ordinances before me. (R) GOSPEL Jesus challenges the people about their motives for coming to see Him. Why do we seek to grow closer to Jesus? Is it for purely selfish reasons or is there altruism involved as well? We will probably discover that we are more focused on what we want or are hoping to receive from God. Let us try to make our intentions a little more altruistic by also asking God how we can use the blessings we seek in the service of His Kingdom. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION One does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God. Numbers 10-12 John 6:22-29 22 [After Jesus had fed the five thousand men, his disciples saw him walking on the sea.] The next day, the crowd that remained across the sea saw that there had been only one boat there, and that Jesus had not gone along with his disciples in the boat, but only his disciples had left. 23 Other boats came from Tiberias near the place where they had eaten the bread when the Lord gave thanks. 24 When the crowd saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they themselves got into boats and came to Capernaum looking for Jesus. 25 And when they found him across the sea they said to him, “Rabbi, when did you get here?” 26 Jesus answered them and said, “Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. 27 Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him the Father, God, has set his seal.” 28 So they said to him, “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” 29 Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” GOSPEL PSALM think: Let us ask him to intercede for us, so we will grow in our desire and capacity to be of service to our faith communities. T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Numbers 10-12 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | BELIEVING AND WORKING! Over the past years, we Filipinos have been entertained (or saddened, as the case may be) by a series of Senate and Congressional investigations. There is no doubt about it. We believe in justice. We take pains in knowing the truth, and we have always bought that line that says all of it is done “in aid of legislation.” In the years I have been a priest, I have attended quite a number of international meetings and conventions. We Filipinos shine when it comes to conventions abroad. We end up becoming reporters, secretaries, and we do have a reputation for being good speakers. We believe in the power of words to convince, cajole and otherwise co-opt initially doubting Thomases to our side. But there is a flip side to this seemingly positive image. Word soon spreads around that we may be sorely wanting when it comes to walking the talk. While we believe in justice, we may not be all that committed to working for it. The piling number of futile investigations seems to be eloquent testimony to this. The question of the disciples is our question too: “What can we do to accomplish the works of God?” The Lord’s answer, “Believe in the one he sent,” seems to point out the connection between believing and working. Ironically, even Forrest Gump understood this. Told by his mother repeatedly, “Stupid is as stupid does,” he learned his lessons for life. He remembered and did what he believed in, with passion and panache, even if that meant running like he had never run before in his life. We all need to do more than simply believe. We need to live what we believe. We need to learn that it takes more than just political grandstanding to ferret out the truth and do justice. We need to tell the world that we mean what we say, and not just say what we mean. For doing God’s works and believing are part of one and the same package. Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB REFLECTION QUESTIONS: What Christian values do you believe in? Do you live them as well? Lord Jesus, help me to live out what I believe in. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
