| | 14 BEATING THE DEADLINE He appeared to them and rebuked them for their unbelief. – Mark 16:14 The layout of our March 2011 issue was almost done and I lacked two stories. One interviewee backed out, and the other one, who had previously agreed to have his story published in his community’s newsletter, didn’t want it to come out in Kerygma at the same time. I browsed through my story bank and found one that would make a good replacement. And then through my network, I got another one, which I had to schedule for an interview. Unfortunately, he was a busy doctor and I couldn’t even get a phone interview. I was on the verge of panic. But in my heart, I knew that things would fall into place, as it always did since I assumed the post of managing editor of Kerygma. Yet times like these made me resort all the more to prayer. In the silence of my heart, I heard God say, “Don’t you trust Me? I am in control.” The next day, I received an email from another contact, referring me to a priest-friend of hers who, to my delight, was the best person to interview! | | COMPANION | 1ST READING The disciples were not the smartest or the most erudite men of their time. They were simple men who had experienced an extraordinary call to become disciples of Jesus. They had become convinced that there was something in the message of Jesus that was different and decided to learn from Him in His ministry and then carry it on once He had ascended into heaven. Acts 4:13-21 13 Observing the boldness of Peter and John and perceiving them to be uneducated, ordinary men, the leaders, elders, and scribes were amazed, and they recognized them as the companions of Jesus. 14 Then when they saw the man who had been cured standing there with them, they could say nothing in reply. 15 So they ordered them to leave the Sanhedrin, and conferred with one another, saying, 16 “What are we to do with these men? Everyone living in Jerusalem knows that a remarkable sign was done through them, and we cannot deny it. 17 But so that it may not be spread any further among the people, let us give them a stern warning never again to speak to anyone in this name.” 18 So they called them back and ordered them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 Peter and John, however, said to them in reply, “Whether it is right in the sight of God for us to obey you rather than God, you be the judges. 20 It is impossible for us not to speak about what we have seen and heard.” 21 After threatening them further, they released them, finding no way to punish them, on account of the people who were all praising God for what had happened. P S A L M Psalm 118:1, 14-15, 16-18, 19-21 R: I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me. 1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his mercy endures forever. 14 My strength and my courage is the Lord, and he has been my savior. 15 The joyful shout of victory in the tents of the just. (R) GOSPEL What does it mean to be called to “proclaim the Good News to all Creation”? The phrase Jesus uses here is sort of funny. Are we supposed to proclaim the Gospel to animals and plants? Some of the saints did this, for example, Anthony of Padua, Don Bosco and Francis of Assisi, just to name a few. But there is a bit more to these words than their literal interpretation. God wants us to realize that all of Creation needs redemption as it “suffers” from our sins. Animal species are constantly renewing themselves, as is the plant kingdom and even the Earth itself. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it. Mark 16:9-15 9 When Jesus had risen, early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. 10 She went and told his companions who were mourning and weeping. 11 When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe. 12 After this he appeared in another form to two of them walking along on their way to the country. 13 They returned and told the others; but they did not believe them either. 14 But later, as the eleven were at table, he appeared to them and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart because they had not believed those who saw him after he had been raised. 15 He said to them, “Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature.” Leviticus 10-12 BLESSING LIST think: The disciples were not the smartest nor the most erudite men of their time. | | SABBATH | HERALDING THE GOOD NEWS As a young seminarian, I was invited to speak before a group of people in a small poor community nestled in the middle of the city. As I entered their place, I was at once taken aback by the sorry state of their living conditions. I began my talk with the question, “Ano po ba mga pinagkakaabalahan niyo dito?” I was met with tremendously edifying answers that really touched my heart. The women in that community regularly take turns in cleaning their parish church located in a big subdivision but which they are members of. Two of them were community-based volunteer catechists teaching the kids in their own community. The men were parking attendants in the busy business district during weekdays and volunteer parking attendants in the church during weekends. Three were Eucharistic Ministers. And what do their children do? One mother offers this response, “Naku, ‘yan pong mga elementary na ‘yan, nag-iipon ng mga bente-singko mula sa baon nila. Tapos pagdating ng Sabado pupunta sa phone booth doon sa kanto, bunutan sila kung sino ang tatawag sa telepono para sabihin lang, ‘Linggo po bukas. Simba po kayo ha, sama buong pamilya ha! Thank you, babay!’” (Those elementary students, they save 25-centavo coins from their allowances. Then on Saturdays, they go to the phone booth at the corner street and they draw lots as to who will make the phone calls just to say, ‘It’s Sunday tomorrow. Please go to Mass with your whole family! Thank you! Bye!’”) This whole Easter week we are bombarded with stories of jubilation on the part of those who have come to see the Resurrected Christ. We know that the Resurrected Christ came to give us peace and to comfort us in our miseries brought about by our own misdeeds. Now, the Resurrected Christ is giving us a command to proclaim all that we have come to know, see and experience. We are asked to tell the story of the Good News of Jesus Christ. We are now to become His heralds to the world, just like the people in that poor community I visited. Fr. Sandy V.
