| Temper Tantrum For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice. – James 3:16 I was waiting in line to pay my groceries when I noticed a cute little girl waiting for her mom. She was happy playing with her doll until she saw a boy munching on a chocolate bar. The little girl grabbed candies from the closest rack, but the mom quickly returned the sweets, saying, “Honey, I’ve got candies for you and you’ll have them when we get back home, OK?” The girl started crying and screaming at the top of her lungs so she could get what she wanted. I couldn’t believe how a child could turn from being so adorable into an annoying brat. It’s embarrassing to see kids throwing temper tantrums but it’s worse when an adult does the same — yelling out frustration, slamming doors and pounding on tables; cutting people off to get ahead in a queue; constantly finding faults and complaining without thinking how to make things better. All these happen when we want to control a situation without showing respect to others. Sadly, even the seemingly nicest of us can become the nastiest if we allow self-interest to overcome us. Jane Gonzales-Rauch (mgr516@gmail.com) 20 REFLECTION: Conflicts may be minimized when we set selfishness aside. Dear Lord, forgive my selfish soul and cleanse my heart that I may be selfless like You. Amen. Blessed Jacinta and Francisco Marto, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING James is very strong on humility and wisdom as these are the basis for living a good and holy Christian life. Humility is especially important when it comes to holiness as the holier we get, the greater the temptation will be that we are better than others; the more effective we are in ministry, the more likely we are to fall into sins of pride and presumption. Let us cultivate the virtue of humility and be active in doing the least attractive jobs and tasks in our ministries. James 3:13-18 13 Beloved: Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show his works by a good life in the humility that comes from wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 Wisdom of this kind does not come down from above but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. P S A L M Psalm 19:8, 9, 10, 15 R: The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart. 7 [8] The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul; the decree of the Lord is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. (R) 8 [9] The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart; the command of the Lord is clear, enlightening the eye. (R) 9 [10] The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are true, all of them just. (R) 14 [15] Let the words of my mouth and the thought of my heart find favor before you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. (R) GOSPEL Jesus affirms a central role for prayer and fasting when it comes to empowering our ministry. I think they are important also from the point of view of helping us avoid the sin of presumption in our ministries. We should always seek to acquit ourselves to the best of our abilities when it comes to serving the Lord. We should never presume that because it is the work of God, He will automatically bless everything we do with unbounded success. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life to light through the Gospel. Mark 9:14-29 14 As Jesus came down from the mountain with Peter, James, John approached the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes arguing with them. 15 Immediately on seeing him, the whole crowd was utterly amazed. They ran up to him and greeted him. 16 He asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” 17 Someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I have brought to you my son possessed by a mute spirit. 18 Wherever it seizes him, it throws him down; he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they were unable to do so.” 19 He said to them in reply, “O faithless generation, how long will I be with you? How long will I endure you? Bring him to me.” 20 They brought the boy to him. And when he saw him, the spirit immediately threw the boy into convulsions. As he fell to the ground, he began to roll around and foam at the mouth. 21 Then he questioned his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” He replied, “Since childhood. 22 It has often thrown him into fire and into water to kill him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 Jesus said to him, “ ‘If you can!’ Everything is possible to one who has faith.” 24 Then the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe, help my unbelief!” 25 Jesus, on seeing a crowd rapidly gathering, rebuked the unclean spirit and said to it, “Mute and deaf spirit, I command you: come out of him and never enter him again!” 26 Shouting and throwing the boy into convulsions, it came out. He became like a corpse, which caused many to say, “He is dead!” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand, raised him, and he stood up. 28 When he entered the house, his disciples asked him in private, “Why could we not drive it out?” 29 He said to them, “This kind can only come out through prayer.” think: Let us cultivate the virtue of humility and be active in doing the least attractive jobs and tasks in our ministries. Since my ordination on April 3, 1988, I have become increasingly busy with various assignments in our congregation and with manifold ministries in different renewal communities. My priestly ministry has become action-packed and throughly demanding. Consequently, I had less time for silence, private prayers, and community prayers with my congregation. There were occasions that I did not join our congregation’s retreats and recollections because I had lots of apostolic work to do. I often found myself rationalizing my ways: apostolate and ministry are also for the greater glory of God and for the good of others. I accomplish in action what others do as service to the needy through intercession and bended knees. Slowly, the practical demands of apostolate and ministry started getting into my nerves. The very persons I was to serve became sources of irritation. I caught myself celebrating the Eucharist, many times, in a perfunctory manner. Reflections became redundant and lacked depth. My lack of prayer affected not just my effectiveness with others; it was drying up the very well of spirit and goodwill in me. Jesus’ words to the disciples about their desired efficiency in mission, is true: “This kind can only come out through prayer.” Nothing can compensate for lack of connectedness with God in prayer. Our ministries and apostolates are not ours — they are but extensions of the work that God in Jesus had inaugurated. All these are God’s. I am then most grateful that the celebration of the Year for Priests came around. The talks of Fr. Raniero Cantalamessa, OFMCap, about prayer and the priesthood touched me personally. I began to recover my prayer time. I looked for the old Manual of Prayers that I used as a seminarian. The prayers in the manual made me pray more with simplicity and with the sentiments of the Pauline Charism of Blessed James Alberione, our Father-Founder. Prayer is not a waste of time. It does not take us away from apostolate and ministry. Prayer, rather, is the soul of every apostolate and ministry. Fr. Domie Guzman, SSP REFLECTION QUESTION: How has your involvement in ministries and apostolates deepened your love and appreciation of prayer? Trace your own journey in this regard. Lord Jesus, help me once more to connect with You through regular prayer time. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
