| HIDDEN SPOTS Rather, each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. – James 1:14 In a retreat I took during my early years of following Jesus, I was asked to list down my weaknesses and temptations. The exercise was to help me know myself better and to see where the evil one would most likely attack me. I remember listing several, one of which was my tendency to be passionate about an interest and then forget about it when the passion wanes. It would have been OK except that I usually spend a lot of money and time on my interest when my passion is at its peak, and the consequence is that I’m saddled with lots of baggage. I recall indulging in several crafts at different points of my life: artificial flowers, cross-stitch, glass etching, button making and so on. The same goes with my mental pursuits: I switched from my profession as a management and industrial engineer to business to counseling to human resource management and finally to writing. I’d accumulate tons of books on these subjects, hoping to read them one day. Knowing my hidden spots has helped me curb my tendency to satisfy my inordinate desires that would derail me from living a life that’s pleasing to God. Tess V. Atienza (svp_tvatienza@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: This Valentine’s Day, reflect on what inordinate desires keep you from loving God as He deserves. Lord, grant me the grace to face my hidden weaknesses and desires. May I always seek You in my desires. St. Cyril, monk, and St. Methodius, bishop, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The world has a myriad of seductions available to try and distract us from our goals. The only way we will prevail over the insistence of the world is if we place our eyes on the prize of eternal life and do not let them wander far from it. This is a very difficult thing to do in practice as the world’s enticements have an immediate reward, whereas with the Kingdom of God, the reward is well into the future. James 1:12-18 12 Blessed is he who perseveres in temptation, for when he has been proved he will receive the crown of life that he promised to those who love him. 13 No one experiencing temptation should say, “I am being tempted by God”; for God is not subject to temptation to evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 Rather, each person is tempted when lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire conceives and brings forth sin, and when sin reaches maturity it gives birth to death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers and sisters: 17 all good giving and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no alteration or shadow caused by change. 18 He willed to give us birth by the word of truth that we may be a kind of first-fruits of his creatures. P S A L M Psalm 94:12-13, 14-15, 18-19 R: Blessed the man you instruct, O Lord. 12 Blessed the man whom you instruct, O Lord, whom by your law you teach, 13 Giving him rest from evil days. (R) 14 For the Lord will not cast off his people, nor abandon his inheritance; 15 But judgment shall again be with justice, and all the upright of heart shall follow it. (R) 18 When I say, “My foot is slipping,” your mercy, O Lord, sustains me; 19 When cares abound within me, your comfort gladdens my soul. (R) GOSPEL Jesus provides for us in abundance; He can even provide us with a written language in order to express the Gospel to others. Sts. Cyril and Methodius whom we celebrate today developed the Cyrillic alphabet in order to translate the Scriptures into the language of the Slav people. There is no mountain too high that God’s grace cannot help us conquer it or go around it, as the case may be. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Whoever loves me will keep my word, says the Lord; and my Father will love him and we will come to him. Mark 8:14-21 14 The disciples had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15 Jesus enjoined them, “Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.” 16 They concluded among themselves that it was because they had no bread. 17 When he became aware of this he said to them, “Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread? Do you not yet understand or comprehend? Are your hearts hardened? 18 Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear? And do you not remember, 19 when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?” They answered him, “Twelve.” 20 “When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many full baskets of fragments did you pick up?” They answered him, “Seven.” 21 He said to them, “Do you still not understand?” think: There is no mountain too high that God’s grace cannot help us conquer it or go around it, as the case may be. T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR 2 Corinthians 5-8 s 1-4READING 2nd READING | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | UNDERSTANDING LEADS TO BELIEVING One of the key themes in all the Gospels is understanding the message of Jesus. It is very difficult to believe in something if one does not understand it. This is very true of the Gospel as it presents to us a new way of understanding and entering into a relationship with God, namely through His Son, Jesus. One of the difficulties the disciples had, and all who heard Jesus speak, was that He often spoke in parables and through His actions, and not necessarily in simple, straightforward language. I wonder why Jesus chose to speak through miracles, signs and stories? Perhaps it was to present a very human face of God in the Gospel. The concept of God automatically instills a sense of awe in us, such that there is a need to bring things “down to earth.” We need to realize that the Incarnation is God speaking to us of His desire to be a part of our lives and not a distant being that we sometimes call on for help. Most images we have of God tend to set Him apart from us, out there somewhere. At best, the distance between God and us changes once in a while for a short period of time. This is not the God that Jesus presents to us. He is a God intimately involved in the daily issues of our lives — well, at least He is if we open our lives to Him! Therein lies the issue at hand. Do we not see that God wants to be a part of our lives? And if we do understand this, why are we not letting Him into our hearts and lives? All the miracles of Jesus speak to us of basic aspects of human living — eating, healing and so on. This is a sign to us that God wants to engage us in all areas of our lives. The question that remains is whether or not we will allow Him to do this. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL REFLECTION QUESTIONS: Have you offered your life to God today? Have you chosen to invite Him to be a part of all that you will do today? Jesus, help me to open my heart and mind to Your grace and Spirit so that I will hear Your call to follow, and be faithful and obedient to it. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
