| friend of sinners “Then the Son of Man came, he ate and drank, and people said: ‘Look at this man! A glutton and drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’” – Matthew 11:19 “Tell me who your friends are and I’ll tell you who you are.” This is an oft-repeated quote I heard from my parents, teachers and elders when I was young to drive home the point that I should dissociate myself from classmates and neighbors who have a bad record in school or the community lest I also be branded as such. As I matured, however, I realized that a person can be a catalyst for change. But how can we expect “bad” people to change if the good ones avoid them like a plague? This was exactly what Jesus did. He did not avoid tax collectors and sinners; instead, He befriended them and dined with them. Jesus had His reasons for doing so — He changed their ways, as we saw in Zaccheus, the tax collector who made amends for his wrongdoings (Luke 19:1-10). Let us, therefore, not judge a person on the basis of who his friends or companions are. Instead, let us look at the intention of that person. Bay Cabrera (baycabrera@yahoo.com) 9 REFLECTION: Jesus, by His example, taught us not to judge other people by the company they keep. Have we been judgmental of others? Lord, teach us not to be harsh in our judgment of others. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING God promises His people repeatedly that if they would follow His law, they would prosper. This is because the law of God is not something that He has arbitrarily imposed on us as a burden, but it is like a handbook of instructions on how to make life work best for us. Many people are deceived into thinking that, in some way, sin will benefit them. This is a great deception and lie. A person may be able to cheat the legal system by corruption, but you can never cheat the law of God. By following God’s law and commandments, not only will we avoid a lot of unnecessary pain but receive countless blessings as well. Isaiah 48:17-19 17 Thus says the LORD, your redeemer, the Holy One of Israel I, the LORD, your God, teach you what is for your good, and lead you on the way you should go. 18 If you would hearken to my commandments, your prosperity would be like a river, and your vindication like the waves of the sea; 19 your descendants would be like the sand, and those born of your stock like its grains, their name never cut off or blotted out from my presence. P S A L M Psalms 1:1-2, 3, 4, 6 R: Those who follow you, Lord, will have the light of life. 1 Blessed the man who follows not the counsel of the wicked nor walks in the way of sinners, nor sits in the company of the insolent, 2 but delights in the law of the LORD and meditates on his law day and night. (R) 3 He is like a tree planted near running water, that yields its fruit in due season, and whose leaves never fade. Whatever he does, prospers. (R) 4 Not so the wicked, not so; they are like chaff which the wind drives away. 6 For the LORD watches over the way of the just, but the way of the wicked vanishes. (R) G O S P E L Christ here complains that no matter how God’s Word comes to the people, whether it be via the asceticism of a prophet like John the Baptist or the party-loving Jesus of Nazareth, they are unwilling to accept it. Are we also so blind and hard-hearted that we cannot receive the messages of God unless they come packaged the way we want it? Let us have hearts that are truly open and receptive to God’s message, no matter how it comes to us. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia The Lord will come; go out to meet him! He is the prince of peace. R: Alleluia, alleluia Matthew 11:16-19 16 Jesus said to the crowds: “To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children who sit in marketplaces and call to one another, 17 ‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we sang a dirge but you did not mourn.’ 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they said, ‘He is possessed by a demon.’ 19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking and they said, ‘Look, he is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is vindicated by her works.” my reflections think: By following God’s law and commandments, not only will we avoid a lot of unnecessary pain but receive countless blessings as well. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Galatians 4-6 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | DYING FOR, NOT DYING OF An honest and decent man died suddenly and was met by an angel guarding the check-in counter of the pearly gates of heaven. The angel was a substitute for the day so he was quite unfamiliar with the ins and outs of entrance into heaven. After getting the man’s name, he asked when he died. “Just this morning,” the man quipped. The angel took out a black book called Liber Defunctorum (Latin for “Book of the Dead”) and searched for the man’s name. Not finding it, he asked again, “Did you say you died today? Your name is not in this book. Neither is it on the dates before today.” Noticing the commotion, Jesus approached the angel and volunteered, “You will not find his name there. That is the book of the dead. Those bound for heaven are in the Book of the Living. They are forever alive in my presence.” With that, the man was ushered into heaven. Today’s first reading from the prophet Isaiah encourages the righteous man and woman who walk in the way of the Lord. Those who live godly lives are to savor the presence of the Lord. The reading ends with the blessed assurance, “their name (will) never (be) cut off or blotted out from my presence.” Christian theology recognizes two kinds of death. There is what we call terminal death. As the term terminal implies, it is the end of everything — the end of a life wasted and spent for less than significant things. It is a kind of death where the only thing people attending the wake talk about is, “What did he die of?” Not only is it the end of one’s earthly life, it could also be the end of a possibility of life lived with God’s beatifying presence. It is an eternity of separation from God’s beatitude. But there is a paschal kind of death. Paschal suggests dying to self which is Jesus’ invitation to carry one’s cross. It suggests a life lived in self-donation and self-giving. It is that kind of death where people attending the wake do not ask, “What did he die of?” Instead they ask, “What did he die for?” It is a life of purpose, meaning and significance. That’s why for God, they are “never cut off or blotted from My presence.” Fr. Joel O. Jason Reflection Question: There are two kinds of people. Some bring happiness wherever they go. Others, whenever they go. To which do you belong? Lord, make my today, and always, a day lived in self-donation. Amen.
