Remarkable Moments

“We have seen incredible things today.” – Luke 5:26

I have big dreams for my children.
My son has been diagnosed with autism and I am still waiting for the day when he can spontaneously and sincerely say, “I love you, Mommy!” When that day comes, it will be a wonderful day.
My little girl is just a toddler but I can’t wait for the day when she comes home from school and shows me her first star as an award. When that day comes, it will be an amazing day.
For now, I content myself with anecdotes from my son’s teachers of his progress in school and in therapy. Once, when his teacher reported that my son had spontaneously identified the picture of a boy and said “boy,” it was a wonderful day for me.
A few days ago, when I came home from work, my little girl came running to me, shouted my name and gave me a tight hug. It instantly made my day.
Remarkable moments are not limited to the times when extraordinary things happen. Simple moments I spend with family and loved ones are just as remarkable. Each and every minute spent with my family is a moment to remember and be thankful for. Mae Ignacio (maemi04@aim.com)

REFLECTION:
What made you smile today? Thank God for that incredible moment.

Dear Father, thank You for every amazing moment You have given me. Thank You for today.

1st READING

The coming of the Messiah is expressed in language that shows the restoration of the Garden of Eden from the barrenness of the desert. Just as sin brought death and barrenness, so will the coming of Christ bring life and fruitfulness. In our lives, sin always brings sorrow and death. When we turn to the Lord, He forgives us and restores our fruitfulness. Let us not allow the evil one to deceive us; instead let us join our hearts to Christ who alone can make us truly alive and happy.

Isaiah 35:1-10
1 The desert and the parched land will exult; the steppe will rejoice and bloom. 2 They will bloom with abundant flowers, and rejoice with joyful song. The glory of Lebanon will be given to them, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. 3 Strengthen the hands that are feeble, make firm the knees that are weak, 4 say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you. 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; 6 then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the dumb will sing. Streams will burst forth in the desert, and rivers in the steppe. 7 The burning sands will become pools, and the thirsty ground, springs of water; the abode where jackals lurk will be a marsh for the reed and papyrus. 8 A highway will be there, called the holy way; no one unclean may pass over it, nor fools go astray on it. 9 No lion will be there, nor beast of prey go up to be met upon it. It is for those with a journey to make, and on it the redeemed will walk. 10 Those whom the LORD has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing, crowned with everlasting joy; they will meet with joy and gladness, sorrow and mourning will flee.

Psalms 85:9-10, 11-12, 13-14
R: Our God will come to save us!
8 [9] I will hear what God proclaims; the LORD — for he proclaims peace to his people. 9 [10] Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him, glory dwelling in our land. (R) 10 [11] Kindness and truth shall meet; justice and peace shall kiss. 11 [12] Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. (R) 12 [13] The LORD himself will give his benefits; our land shall yield its increase. 13 [14] Justice shall walk before him, and salvation, along the way of his steps. (R)

In this story, we see how each of us can play a part in another’s healing. The faith and persistence of the friends of the paralytic was seen and rewarded by Jesus. So, too, can we bring in prayer all those who are sick or in any need and believe that God’s grace and healing will be upon them.

ALLELUIA
R: Alleluia, alleluia
Behold the king will come, the Lord of the earth, and he himself will lift the yoke of our captivity.

Luke 5:17-26
17 One day as Jesus was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was with him for healing. 18 And some men brought on a stretcher a man who was paralyzed; they were trying to bring him in and set him in his presence. 19 But not finding a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on the stretcher through the tiles into the middle in front of Jesus. 20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “As for you, your sins are forgiven.” 21 Then the scribes and Pharisees began to ask themselves, “Who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who but God alone can forgive sins?” 22 Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them in reply, “What are you thinking in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 24 But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” — he said to the man who was paralyzed, “I say to you, rise, pick up your stretcher, and go home.” 25 He stood up immediately before them, picked up what he had been lying on, and went home, glorifying God. 26 Then astonishment seized them all and they glorified God, and, struck with awe, they said, “We have seen incredible things today.”

The Paralysis of Inaction

Whenever we hear this story of the paralytic man cured by Jesus, we usually focus our attention on the paralytic or on Jesus. Today, however, I would like to draw attention to the friends who brought the paralytic to Jesus.
It was a busy day and, as usual, people crowded Jesus to listen to His teachings and to bring their sick to Him. It was already impossible to even get within hearing distance of Jesus. But these friends of the paralytic were enterprising. They had a plan and failure was not part of it. They went up the roof, calculated where Jesus was, ripped off the tiles of the roof, and slipped down the paralytic before Jesus.
If they were not going to have Jesus’ attention, they were going to get it, and get it they did. Luke mentions that Jesus saw their faith (see verse 20). They got Jesus’ attention, and the healing and the forgiveness as well.
We can learn from the friends of the paralytic. First, they had a plan. They intended to do something, and they carried it out. They did not simply wait for things to happen — they made things happen. I remember here an insightful adage: If you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.
How many of us go through life, or even a day, without a plan? For example, I hear people tell me regretfully, “Father, I thought it was going to be a great marriage.” When I ask them whether they had a plan for a successful marriage, I often get a surprised look or a regretful sigh. Marital bliss is not something that just happens; it is something you make happen. The same principle applies to every human endeavor.
Secondly, the paralytic’s friends did not only have a plan; they acted on it. Most of our plans remain as they are — plans. Ever heard of the saying, “The grass is greener on the other side of the fence”? People who act on their plan  believe something else: “The grass is greener where you water it.” Is the grass greener on the other side of your fence? Maybe because you keep dreaming and pining to jump on the other side, forgetting to water your side of the fence.Fr. Joel O. Jason

Reflection Question:
What area of your life is affected by the paralysis of a lack of plan? What area of your life is affected by the paralysis of an unworked-out plan?

Lord Jesus, heal me from all my paralysis, both real and perceived. Help me plan my work and work out my plans. Amen.

St. Nicolas Tavigli, pray for us.
