| real inheritance “In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places...” – John 14:2 I spent my summers in Asingan, Pangasinan in my grandparent’s place. They have a two-storey house on a one-hectare farm and garden. Sounds “rich,” huh? Until you find out that everybody in that town has the same wooden house, cow or carabao in the back, plus chickens and pigs. Sometimes, I would notice my grandfather taking money from a wooden trunk. So I came to believe that even though we picked our vegetables from the garden and ate our eggs and chicken, my Papang had stashed some hidden wealth — to be revealed someday. A few years later, I realized I was just watching too many treasure hunts. In the Gospel, the promise is that there will be a place for us in heaven. It’s not limited to the 144,000 Christians mentioned in Revelation 7 and 14 but also for the “great multitude” in Revelation 7:9. Now, instead of believing that I will soon inherit great wealth, I know that I am rich through the promise of Christ that I’m part of a royal priesthood, a holy nation and His own people. Jomar Hilario (jomar.hilario@gmail.com) REFLECTION: How much are you worth? You are worth more than earthly treasures! Lord, I look forward to the mansion You’ve prepared for me in heaven. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The Apostles discern very early on that their calling includes some things and that others need to be delegated to other ministers. Thus the order of the Diaconate is born. The same principle is true for all of us – there are aspects of our ministries that need to be addressed directly by us in person; there are others we can delegate. Let us pray for the wisdom to be able to know on what things we should concentrate our attention and those we can hand over to others. Acts 6:1-7 1 As the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. 2 So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, “It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table. 3 Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task, 4 whereas we shall devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” 5 The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the Holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them. 7 The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith. P S A L M Psalms 33:1-2, 4-5, 18-19 R: Lord, let your mercy be on us, as we place our trust in you. 1 Exult, you just, in the LORD; praise from the upright is fitting. 2 Give thanks to the LORD on the harp; with the ten-stringed lyre chant his praises. (R) 4 Upright is the word of the LORD, and all his works are trustworthy. 5 He loves justice and right; of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full. (R) 18 See, the eyes of the LORD are upon those who fear him, upon those who hope for his kindness, 19 to deliver them from death and preserve them in spite of famine. (R) 2nd READING God has chosen each one of us to be His disciple. Each one of us has a task to perform according to the plan of God. Sometimes it is not all that easy to discern what our role in the work of the Kingdom is, but that is usually a result of a lack of commitment on our part to the basics of the Christian life such that our hearts and minds are not suitably disposed towards the Word of God. 1Peter 2:4-9 4 Beloved: Come to him, a living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God, 5 and, like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 6 For it says in scripture: “Behold, I am laying a stone in Zion, a cornerstone, chosen and precious, and whoever believes in it shall not be put to shame.” 7 Therefore, its value is for you who have faith, but for those without faith: “The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” 8 and “A stone that will make people stumble, and a rock that will make them fall.” They stumble by disobeying the word, as is their destiny. 9 But you are “a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people of his own, so that you may announce the praises” of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. G O S P E L Jesus reminds us that He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. This is a word that we need to reflect upon often as it is central to our faith and belief in Jesus. It tells us that Jesus must be the center of all that we do. Jesus is like the director of a film — if it is not on the director’s clipboard, then it just is not part of the drama being played out before us. Let us look to Jesus for our cue on what He wants us to do next. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia I am the way, the truth and the life, says the Lord; no one comes to the Father, except through me. R: Alleluia, alleluia John 14:1-12 1 Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. 2 In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be. 4 Where I am going you know the way.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who dwells in me is doing his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else, believe because of the works themselves. 12 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father.” my reflections t h i n k : L et us look to Jesus for our cue on what He wants us to do next. I have been under leaders, too, for all my life. Some of those who occupy positions of leadership are reputable; some are not. A number of them are wise; and a great many are dumb. (Just look at the many “honorable” and “distinguished” people that hog the air lanes every day!) There are leaders whom I like. They are prudent and charismatic, apart from being role models. There are leaders I dislike. They are narcissistic, focused too much on results, and please themselves more than they try to please God or their constituents. I bet you know what’s coming next. Yes, in the Church that we love, there are leaders and there are leaders... pastors who are exemplary and pastors who are just a bit less than scandalous. The Church has had bad popes and good popes, sinful and saintly bishops, ambitious and humble priests, and men of the cloth who deserve to be called unsung heroes of our times. They do their work quietly and without fanfare. It is easy to love many of them. Like the seven deacons of today’s first reading, a great many are “reputable, filled with the Spirit and wisdom,” and utterly selfless in their service. But it is just as easy to hate, or at least, dislike a number of them, for reasons as many as there are people. People will always find reasons and motives to dislike them. They could be less than reputable. They may sound like they are filled, not with the Spirit, but with some kind of spirits of the liquid kind. They may not be doing right in our eyes. They may not be worthy from our point of view. But they are appointed by God. Through them, “the Word of God continues to spread.” For God can write straight even with crooked lines. Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB Reflection Question: What kind of leader am I? Mold me, Father, to be the kind of leader that You want your sons and daughters to be — a leader with a servant heart.
