| | Follow the Leader “Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do.” – John 14:12 There is a new TV show in the US called Undercover Boss where business owners go incognito in their own company by becoming a normal entry-level employee. It gives the boss an opportunity to experience how it is to work in his own company and discover along the way a lot of interesting things about the employees, their work ethics and how the business is run given the company policies. At the end of the show, the boss reveals his true identity and rewards those who did their job well. Christ came down from heaven to be with us. He knew how it was to live in this life. He experienced the joy as well as the pain of being human and He endured all things for us because He wants us to be saved. He already won for us the greatest prize of all — eternal life. To claim this, we need to deny ourselves, take up our cross each day and follow after Him (Luke 9:23). Let us not put to waste Jesus’ great sacrifice on the cross. | | COMPANION | 1st READING Paul met with a lot of quite well-planned opposition. His Jewish opponents concentrated their mischief on the people they thought would be most influential in working against the mission of Paul. We will come up against all sorts of opposition, some organized and others just a rabble seeking to make trouble. Acts 13:44-52 44 On the following sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said. 46 Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, but since you reject it and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us, ‘I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth.’ ” 48 The Gentiles were delighted when they heard this and glorified the word of the Lord. All who were destined for eternal life came to believe, 49 and the word of the Lord continued to spread through the whole region. 50 The Jews, however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipers and the leading men of the city, stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their territory. 51 So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium. 52 The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit. P S A L M Psalms 98:1, 2-3, 3-4 R: All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God. 1 Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done wondrous deeds; his right hand has won victory for him, his holy arm. (R) 2 The LORD has made his salvation known in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice. 3 He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness toward the house of Israel. (R) All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation by our God. 4 Sing joyfully to the LORD, all you lands; break into song; sing praise. (R) G O S P E L Jesus affirms His fundamental unity with His Father in Heaven. We could reflect upon this relationship for centuries and not fully understand it. However, it is important to get to know it as best we can because the deeper we understand the communion between the Father and the Son, the more readily we will be able to share in it. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, says the Lord. R: Alleluia, alleluia John 14:7-14 7 Jesus said to his disciples: “If you know me, then you will also know my Father. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to Jesus, “Master, show us the Father, and that will be enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on my own. | | SABBATH | LIGHT IN DARKNESS There was a time in my life when electricity came for only 12 hours a day, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. The small town’s generator produced just enough current to allow every home two or three 25-watt bulbs each. The bulbs flickered; the current dipped and surged intermittently, but we sure appreciated and valued the light that was available. I don’t know how many of you have ever experienced pitch darkness in your lives. I don’t know if you ever got to experience hiking up a mountain in total darkness, like I did many years ago. On such occasions, any light, even that of a firefly, is very much appreciated. But darkness, of course, does not only refer to physical darkness. There is so much darkness in the world even in these times of nuclear-fueled power generators —the darkness of ignorance, for one. But there, too, is the darkness of faithlessness, the darkness in a godless world, where people don’t know any better because there are not enough evangelizers to preach to them. I know that most of the Sabbath readers are evangelized enough. But I also know that we who have the time, money and leisure to read reflections like this are called to do much more — to become “light to the Gentiles” and “instruments of salvation.” Beyond our neighborhood, beyond our cuddly and warm communities of faith, there lie innumerable pockets of unbelief and indifference. But there, too, are people in honest search, asking like Philip did, “Master, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” For many the light of faith planted in infancy now flickers and even falters, smothered by the blitzkrieg of consumerism, hedonism and postmodernism. In such a situation filled with the darkness of individualism and indifference, the Church, the prime evangelizer, needs all the help she can get. She needs you to become “light to the Gentiles” and “instrument of salvation.”Fr. Chito Dimaranan, SDB Reflection Question: Look around you. Are there people who need God’s light?
