| NOT A GOOD EXAMPLE “Though you may have to reprove your fellow man, do not incur sin because of him.” – Leviticus 19:17 “Where’s the godparent?” the parish worker asked the woman seated in front us. The mass baptism was about to start, and I was in the church as a godparent for my coworker’s firstborn. “He can’t make it, but we have a proxy,” was the woman’s meek reply, as she cradled her very pretty toddler. My companions and I surmised that the woman was a single parent. The parish worker, a woman in her 50s, suddenly began scolding the woman for not knowing that proxies were no longer allowed for baptismal rites. She spoke quite loud, causing more people to look her way, thus embarrassing the woman and her companions. Unbelievable, I thought. How could a parish worker treat another person that way, and worse, inside the church? That parish worker may have been adept at church dos and don’ts, but she had no right to humiliate the woman for her ignorance. That was downright un-Christianlike. Jesus tells us in the Gospel today that whatever we do to the least of our brethren, we do it unto Him. Let us be careful not to be like that parish worker. Nova Arias (nova.svp@gmail.com) REFLECTION: Think of a time when arrogance got in the way of your service to others. How can you make amends for it? Lord Jesus, humble my heart each and every day so that I may be a good servant to my fellowmen. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING The majority of the Commandments deal with the way we treat one another. This ought to impress upon us the importance of relationships in our lives. If our relationships get damaged through sin, we will experience trouble and difficulty. It is therefore sensible to expend our energy on keeping our relationships healthy so that our experience of life will be more fulfilling. Leviticus 19:1-2, 11-18 1 The LORD said to Moses, 2 “Speak to the whole assembly of the children of Israel and tell them: Be holy, for I, the LORD your God, am holy. 11 You shall not steal. You shall not lie or speak falsely to one another. 12 You shall not swear falsely by my name, thus profaning the name of your God. I am the LORD. 13 You shall not defraud or rob your neighbor. You shall not withhold overnight the wages of your day laborer. 14 You shall not curse the deaf, or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but you shall fear your God. I am the LORD. 15 You shall not act dishonestly in rendering judgment. Show neither partiality to the weak nor deference to the mighty, but judge your fellow men justly. 16 You shall not go about spreading slander among your kinsmen; nor shall you stand by idly when your neighbor’s life is at stake. I am the LORD. 17 “You shall not bear hatred for your brother in your heart. Though you may have to reprove your fellow man, do not incur sin because of him. 18 Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your fellow countrymen. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.” P S A L M Psalms 19:8, 9, 10, 15 R: Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life. 7 [8] The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul; the decree of the LORD is trustworthy, giving wisdom to the simple. (R) 8 [9] The precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the command of the LORD is clear, enlightening the eye. (R) 9 [10] The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the LORD are true, all of them just. (R) 14 [15] Let the words of my mouth and the thought of my heart find favor before you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer. (R) G O S P E L Jesus emphasizes the truth that we are called to love and care for everyone. There are no exceptions to this. Love as a calling always has a place for another human being no matter what our relationship with that person may be and even if we have never met them before. Let us seek to imitate Jesus’ universal love for others as we strive to be His disciples. VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL Behold, now is a very acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. Matthew 25:31-46 31 Jesus said to his disciples: “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, 32 and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 Then the king will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ 40 And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ 41 Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.’ 44 Then they will answer and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?’ 45 He will answer them, ‘Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’ 46 And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.” my reflections t h i n k : Let us seek to imitate Jesus’ universal love for others as we strive to be His disciples. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR 1 Samuel 1-4 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | THE HOLINESS CODE The 19th chapter of Leviticus outlines the Jewish Holiness Code, the heart of their understanding of what living a righteous life means and the more important prescriptions of the Law following from the Mosaic Code of the Ten Commandments. A good Jew is expected to abide by them all insofar as they are relevant to his situation. The existence of a holiness code early on in the lives of the Jewish people indicates a long tradition of recognizing the need to live a holy life. It is not enough to simply declare that “we are God’s People,” or “we are saved by the death and resurrection of Jesus” in the case of Christians. There is far more to a life of faith than what God has done, is doing and will do for us. This point is often the launching pad for the difference between Protestant and Catholic theology on the nature of salvation and how it is gained. By the late Middle Ages, the Catholic Church’s theology and practice had become corrupted by its association with the ruling classes of Europe. It would be true to say that virtually anything and everything could be bought for a price if you knew the right people and had enough money. This is a generalization as there were still some who resisted such corruption but it was the prevalence of all sorts of corruption that gave the initial impetus to the reform-minded Luther. His campaign for reform of the Church was well-intentioned at the start; it just became somewhat derailed towards the middle and end when he met resistance from Church authorities to his proposed reforms and also became radicalized by this experience and some of his colleagues. Protestant theology tends to find little or no place for good works due to its emphasis on faith as the means to salvation. They failed to take into account that good works are a part of faith, maybe not the justifying part, but certainly in the way faith is expressed within and beyond the wider community of the faithful. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL Reflection Question: How serious am I about seeking to grow in holiness? Am I willing to do what is necessary to achieve holiness in my life? Father in heaven, help me to see that the call of holiness is central to my life and that without making the effort to grow in holiness, grace will be lost to me. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
