| GOD IN THE DESERT Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. – Matthew 4:1 God leading people to victory, prosperity, abundance, protection and provision — that was the Bible I knew, bedtime story days. But God leading people to the desert? This must be from a wrong page inserted in this good book. But many great leaders of God — Moses, Elijah, Paul, and yes, Jesus, the Son of God — had plenty of it. Has God ever asked you to do something that seemed unreasonable? Something that took you into the territory of the unknown? What if He asked you to refuse a long-awaited promotion or resist a longed-for relationship? What if He called you to a remote part of the world or asked you to release your children to serve Him in a faraway place? The unknown is full of haunting “what ifs.” Yet God often calls us to chart unknown territory as we follow Him. Obeying His commands to forgive, to give away our treasures or to give up things that provide security and pleasure often leave us in the scary territory of unknown outcomes. Friend, welcome to the desert. Yet the desert gives us two things we won’t get elsewhere: the silence to listen, and the courage to respond. Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@gmail.com) REFLECTION: Are you in the desert today? Don’t worry, God is there with you. Father, grant us faith that when we cling to You, the One who knows all things, we’re in good hands — even on “desert days.” | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING This ancient account of the entry of sin into the world resonates within our hearts as we all have personally experienced many temptations in our lives. It is this personal complicity with sin that affirms that none of us can disown the story we read in today’s reading. As St. Paul tells us in his Letter to the Romans, we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Let us pray that we will have the strength and grace of God to lift ourselves after we have fallen and that we will be committed to the path of holiness for the rest of our lives. Genesis 2:7-9, 3:1-7 7 The LORD God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being. 8 Then the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and he placed there the man whom he had formed. 9 Out of the ground the LORD God made various trees grow that were delightful to look at and good for food, with the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 3: 1 Now the serpent was the most cunning of all the animals that the LORD God had made. The serpent asked the woman, “Did God really tell you not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?” 2 The woman answered the serpent: “We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; 3 it is only about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden that God said, “ ‘You shall not eat it or even touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4 But the serpent said to the woman: “You certainly will not die! 5 No, God knows well that the moment you eat of it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods who know what is good and what is bad.” 6 The woman saw that the tree was good for food, pleasing to the eyes, and desirable for gaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; and she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized that they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made loincloths for themselves. P S A L M Psalms 51:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14, 17 R: Be merciful, O Lord, for we have sinned. 1 [3] Have mercy on me, O God, in your goodness; in the greatness of your compassion wipe out my offense. 2 [4] Thoroughly wash me from my guilt and of my sin cleanse me. (R) 3 [5] For I acknowledge my offense, and my sin is before me always. 4 [6] “Against you only have I sinned, and done what is evil in your sight.” (R) 10 [12] A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me. 11 [13] Cast me not out from your presence, and your Holy Spirit take not from me. (R) 12 [14] Give me back the joy of your salvation, and a willing spirit sustain in me. 15 [17] O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth shall proclaim your praise. (R) 2nd READING The doctrine of Original Sin is something that has grown over the years. This text from Paul is foundational to it, as is the theology of Augustine, Aquinas and many others. The important lesson we learn is the universality of sin and its pervasive character in our lives – it is as though we cannot avoid its consequences even though Christ has victory over sin and death! We, the Church, almost give thanks for the existence of sin in the Easter Liturgy as it caused God to send His Son as our Redeemer! This should not change our attitude towards sin, namely to avoid it at all costs. Romans 5:12-19 12 Brothers and sisters: Through one man sin entered the world, and through sin, death, and thus death came to all, inasmuch as all sinned — 13 for up to the time of the law, sin was in the world, though sin is not accounted when there is no law. 14 But death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who did not sin after the pattern of the trespass of Adam, who is the type of the one who was to come. 15 But the gift is not like the transgression. For if by that one person’s transgression the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one person Jesus Christ overflow for the many. 16 And the gift is not like the result of the one person’s sinning. For after one sin there was the judgment that brought condemnation; but the gift, after many transgressions, brought acquittal. 17 For if, by the transgression of one person, death came to reign through that one, how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of justification come to reign in life through the one person Jesus Christ. 18 In conclusion, just as through one transgression condemnation came upon all, so through one righteous act acquittal and life came to all. 19 For just as through the disobedience of one person the many were made sinners, so through the obedience of one the many will be made righteous. G O S P E L Jesus confronted the reality of sin and temptation in His life on earth. He resists the temptations of the devil by adhering to the truth (the devil is a consummate liar) as found in the Scriptures. We will do well to learn the Scriptures to the extent that we can recall the right verses for the situations we come across in our lives. An actor memorizes many lines when performing – what is there to stop us Christians from learning the Scriptures in order that we can call them to mind when needed? VERSE BEFORE THE GOSPEL One does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God. Matthew 4:1-11 1 At that time Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hungry. 3 The tempter approached and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become loaves of bread.” 4 He said in reply, “It is written: ‘One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.’ ” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, and made him stand on the parapet of the temple, 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: ‘He will command his angels concerning you’ and ‘with their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” 7 Jesus answered him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.’ ” 8 Then the devil took him up to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their magnificence, 9 and he said to him, “All these I shall give to you, if you will prostrate yourself and worship me.” 10 At this, Jesus said to him, “Get away, Satan! It is written: ‘The Lord, your God, shall you worship and him alone shall you serve.’ ” 11 Then the devil left him and, behold, angels came and ministered to him. my reflections t h i n k : Let us pray that we will all have the strength and grace of God to lift ourselves after we have fallen and that we will be committed to the path of holiness for the rest of our lives. This works because there have been hundreds of years of reflection upon the Old Testament that can help us to understand what people were expecting in a Messiah and what the nature of the mission of the Messiah would be. Of course, there is not a perfect match in any of these because when we are dealing with the Old Testament there is no way it can fully comprehend the divine aspect of Jesus’ life and mission. Paul presents Christ to us as the New Adam. Immediately we know that at least a part of his thinking here is that Christ inaugurates a New Creation in His mission that is built on faith and not just material matter. Paul’s understanding of Christ’s relationship with Original Sin is also represented here when he says that Christ is the antidote to the sin of Adam; Christ brings forgiveness and righteousness with His obedience to the Father’s will, whereas Adam brought sin and destruction upon himself and the whole of Creation when he entered into rebellion against God’s will and sinned. He is not blaming Adam for Original Sin anymore than He blames any of us for being complicit with the sin of Adam through our own personal sin. We have to be careful how far we carry any analogy or we could overdo it and get the emphasis wrong. All through the New Testament writings, we will find allusions and references to people in the Old Testament accompanying the suggestion that we try to understand a situation through looking at the life and times of that person and trying to translate them into the present. This is called typology where we say, for example, Adam is a “type” of Christ in this or that way. It is never a case that someone is a “type” of someone else in a complete way.Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL Reflection Question: How much of the Old Testament am I familiar with? Do I read it much? Maybe I should take some time to acquaint myself with more than just the popular stories of the Old Testament. Jesus, help me to open my heart and mind to the guidance of the Holy Spirit so that He can teach me all of the lessons He wants me to learn as I read Your Holy word.
