| PROJECT: TABLE RUNNER Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” – Matthew 19:14 My 10-year-old son had a huge, life-changing, and generation-defining project: a newspaper table runner. His teacher’s objective was to strengthen the parent-child bond by getting them together to work on the project. Aside from the table runner, my son was required to submit photos documenting our “partnership.” Under the first photo, he wrote the caption: “First day of the job. Dad helped me out.” There are times when helping the young with their mundane projects like table runners or with the more complex ones called life drains my physical, mental and emotional reserves. But I also learn valuable lessons: • Some kids follow life in a straight line, while others zig-zag along life’s pathway. It’s best to “zig” with them in love and with courage. • Young people need unconditional love because they live in a conditional world. • Praying with them and reading God’s Word together work miracles. • Young people need to develop a relationship with Christ that is based not on rules but on a deep love of Jesus. Raising the young is not disturbance to our work. It’s our work. Jon Escoto (faithatworkjon@gmail com) REFLECTION: Has God placed young people in your life? Do the work, friend! “The kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” Father, teach me how to receive the young people as You did. Grant me patience, faith in them, and perseverance if I have to “zig” my way through their hearts. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING What does it mean to fear the Lord? It is not a fear that makes us avoid God and keep away from Him as He is our loving Father who wants us always to come to Him no matter what wrong we have done. Rather, this fear is a respect and awe of the greatness and majesty of God so that we never treat God and holy things in a casual and disrespectful way. It is a fear of hurting God by forgetting how much He loves us and of refusing to come to Him to seek His mercy. Joshua 24:14-29 14 Joshua gathered together all the tribes of Israel at Shechem, and addressed them, saying: “Fear the LORD and serve him completely and sincerely. Cast out the gods your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15 If it does not please you to serve the LORD, decide today whom you will serve, the gods your fathers served beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites in whose country you are dwelling. As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” 16 But the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the LORD for the service of other gods. 17 For it was the LORD, our God, who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, out of a state of slavery. He performed those great miracles before our very eyes and protected us along our entire journey and among all the peoples through whom we passed. 18 At our approach the LORD drove out [all the peoples, including] the Amorites who dwelt in the land. Therefore we also will serve the LORD, for he is our God.” 19 Joshua in turn said to the people, “You may not be able to serve the LORD, for he is a holy God; he is a jealous God who will not forgive your transgressions or your sins. 20 If, after the good he has done for you, you forsake the LORD and serve strange gods, he will do evil to you and destroy you.” 21 But the people answered Joshua, “We will still serve the LORD.” 22 Joshua therefore said to the people, “You are your own witnesses that you have chosen to serve the LORD.” They replied, “We are, indeed!” 23 “Now, therefore, put away the strange gods that are among you and turn your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.” 24 Then the people promised Joshua, “We will serve the LORD, our God, and obey his voice.” 25 So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day and made statutes and ordinances for them at Shechem, 26 which he recorded in the book of the law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak that was in the sanctuary of the LORD. 27 And Joshua said to all the people, “This stone shall be our witness, for it has heard all the words which the LORD spoke to us. It shall be a witness against you, should you wish to deny your God.” 28 Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to his own heritage. 29 After these events, Joshua, son of Nun, servant of the LORD, died at the age of a hundred and ten. P S A L M Psalms 16:1-2, 5, 7-8, 11 R: You are my inheritance, O Lord. 1 Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge; 2 I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you. 5 O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup, you it is who hold fast my lot. (R) 7 I bless the LORD who counsels me; even in the night my heart exhorts me. 8 I set the LORD ever before me; with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed. (R) 11 You will show me the path to life, fullness of joys in your presence, the delights at your right hand forever. (R) G O S P E L At the time that Jesus lived, children were not considered to be of any great importance or significance. The disciples no doubt felt that Jesus should not waste His precious time ministering to children as there were many important people seeking His help. Jesus shows by His actions that each child is precious to Him and in fact can receive the gift of eternal life. We should never think that a child cannot have a profound experience of God. Let us do all we can to help them grow in their faith and love for God. ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the Kingdom. R: Alleluia, alleluia Matthew 19:13-15 13 Children were brought to Jesus that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked them, 14 but Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” 15 After he placed his hands on them, he went away. my reflections t h i n k : Let us do all we can to help the children grow in their faith and love for God. God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Wisdom Sirach 16-20 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | CHOOSE TODAY WHOM YOU WILL SERVE One of the reasons why we need to remember the blessings of God is that they provide us the motivation we need to follow God. Blessings are a great motivation when it comes to taking on something that we know from the outset is going to be difficult and may involve suffering. Discipleship requires motivation. Yes, the greatest motivator is love and that is precisely why God wants us to reflect upon His blessings as expressions of His love. The expectation of or for blessings may not be the purest of motivations but it certainly is a start in the right direction. We must always seek to grow in our faith and particularly in the desire to purify that faith in love. The challenge that this proposes to all Christians is enormous as we live in a world that is suffused through selfishness. This selfishness works directly against the true nature of love. It is time for us to rediscover the truth about love and become ambassadors for that truth as we follow wherever Christ leads us. If there is one thing that sets us apart as Christians, it should be love. Jesus recognized this when He told His disciples that the world will know we are Christians by the love we have for each other. (See John 13:34-35.) Christians are supposed to be witnesses to the true nature of love in the way we live. This is true for each one of us. We cannot exempt ourselves, no matter what our situation may be. In fact, the effectiveness of the Church’s proclamation of the Gospel depends on our commitment in giving our selfless love to the world and all who live in it. Perhaps the best example of this is the men and women who live lives of intercession and penance in the many cloistered communities around the world. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL Reflection Question: How do I respond to my responsibility to live selflessly? What can I do to improve my capacity to love others? Jesus, teach me to live a life that is committed to love others. Never allow me to become self-centered and thus become a false witness to true love.
