| Dear Lordie, Each Sunday is a Mini-Easter. Show that Jesus is alive today!
Praying for you,
Bo Sanchez
| YES IS SPELLED Y-E-S “Simply let your `Yes’ be `Yes,’ and your`No,’ `No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. “ – Matthew 5:37 After a long day’s grueling seminar, I was dead meat. My back longed for the feel of the bed sheet of the hotel room, and my eyes were hanging the sign “closed.” But I had one problem: I said “yes” to another meeting. My finger was ready to type in an SMS that was supposed to read, “Won’t make it, don’t feel well.” But God’s Word reminded my Spirit that integrity is simple: A “yes” is “yes.” On my way back to the hotel room after that meeting, I received an SMS that read, “Great meeting! Now enjoy the sleep of the just.” The Bible teaches that a just man keeps his word. Just like John Gedge, an English tourist who was just visiting the US when he was cited for speeding. Officials in Philadelphia were astonished to receive a letter and payment from a motorist who had been given a speeding ticket in 1954. The penalty was $15, but Gedge forgot about the ticket for almost 52 years until he discovered it in an old coat. “I thought, I’ve got to pay it,” said Gedge, 84. REFLECTION: Have there been unfulfilled promises in the family: a promise to bring the kids out on the weekend or a promise to visit your aging parents? Father, Your Word is Yourself. You are faithful and true. May we be like You. Blessed Archangela Girlani, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING I doubt there are any other passages in the Scriptures that are clearer in telling us that our ultimate destiny rests in the decisions that we make. No one else can choose eternal life or eternal damnation for us – we do this ourselves. Of course, the power to bring about our salvation rests with God, but if it is going to take effect in our lives, we will have to surrender to it! Sirach 15:15-20 15 If you choose you can keep the commandments, they will save you; if you trust in God, you too shall live; 16 he has set before you fire and water; to whichever you choose, stretch forth your hand. 17 Before man are life and death, whichever he chooses shall be given him. 18 Immense is the wisdom of the LORD; he is mighty in power, and all-seeing. 19 The eyes of God see all he has made; he understands man’s every deed. 20 No one does he command to act unjustly, to none does he give license to sin. P S A L M Psalms 119:1-2, 4-5, 17-18, 33-34 R: Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord! 1 Blessed are they whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD. 2 Blessed are they who observe his decrees, who seek him with all their heart. (R) 4 You have commanded that your precepts be diligently kept. 5 Oh, that I might be firm in the ways of keeping your statutes! (R) 17 Be good to your servant, that I may live and keep your words. 18 Open my eyes, that I may consider the wonders of your law. (R) 33 Instruct me, O LORD, in the way of your statutes, that I may exactly observe them. 34 Give me discernment, that I may observe your law and keep it with all my heart. (R) 2nd READING The wisdom of God is often beyond our human capacity to fathom. Generally speaking, deep insights into the mind and heart of God are in the domain of the mystics. It is only through knowledge borne of something greater than our human capacity that such insights reveal the truth of God. The question we all must answer is what level of commitment to the wisdom of God are we willing to make? 1Corinthians 2:6-10 6 Brothers and sisters: We speak a wisdom to those who are mature, but not a wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age who are passing away. 7 Rather, we speak God’s wisdom, mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined before the ages for our glory, 8 and which none of the rulers of this age knew; for if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 But as it is written: “What eye has not seen, and ear has not heard, and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love him,” 10 this God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God. G O S P E L The virtuous life is all about sustained commitment to doing good, to doing what we know through our conscience is the right thing to do. Such a life is never easy as it always involves making sacrifices in order to remain faithful to our commitments to God. If we are willing to commit to follow the truth of God, we will begin to discover and then put down roots into the truth that ‘sets us free’ (cf. John 8:32). ALLELUIA R: Alleluia, alleluia Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom. R: Alleluia, alleluia Matthew 5:17-37 17 Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets. I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. 18 Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the law, until all things have taken place. 19 Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 20 I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter into the kingdom of heaven. 21 “You have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘You shall not kill; and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.’ 22 But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment, and whoever says to his brother, ‘Raqa,’ will be answerable to the Sanhedrin, and whoever says, ‘You fool,’ will be liable to fiery Gehenna. 23 Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother has anything against you, 24 leave your gift there at the altar, go first and be reconciled with your brother, and then come and offer your gift. 25 Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court with him. Otherwise your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison. 26 Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny. 27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you, everyone who looks at a womanwith lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna. 31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife —unless the marriage is unlawful — causes her to commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. 33 “Again you have heard that it was said to your ancestors, ‘Do not take a false oath, but make good to the Lord all that you vow.’ 34 But I say to you, do not swear at all; not by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 nor by the earth, for it is his footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. 36 Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black. 37 Let your ‘Yes’ mean ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No’ mean ‘No.’ Anything more is from the evil one.” my reflections think: What level of commitment to the wisdom of God are we willing to make? Let us focus on one: Lessons on Community Life. Jesus teaches us today three very important lessons on community life. First, surpass the virtue of the scribes and Pharisees. The well-meaning scribes and Pharisees strive to live justly: “An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.” But there is a virtue higher than justice. It is called mercy. And mercy is God’s greatest attribute. Mercy is not the absence of justice; it is justice anticipated. Mercy does not condone the attacker; rather, it restores whatever has been rendered wrong. But mercy also restores the wrongdoer. Justice can be brutal; mercy tempers it. Let us make our communities merciful even as they are just. Second, if you have to be angry, be angry with something and never with someone. Hate the sin, not the sinner. Anger, when directed towards someone, is always a creeping homicide. Do not allow anger to continue liquidating us; let us liquidate anger instead. Third, take the initiative. Many minor misunderstandings become epic wars simply because no one wants to take the initiative toward sincere reconciliation. More often than not, parties in conflict refuse to take the reconciliatory initiative, to be the first to say “I’m sorry,” because of pride. Lent is not only a special time for self-renewal. It is also very much a grace-filled opportunity for the renewal of our communities. It is a chance for us to grow not only inour communities but also withour communities. Be merciful. Be angry with something and not with someone. Be the first to reconcile. Be like Jesus, our Peace. Fr. Bobby Titco Reflection Question: How am I in my community? While You call us individually and personally, Jesus, You gather us in communities. There are no perfect communities, I know, dear Lord, but despite the imperfections of our communities, let Your light shine through them and Your love reign over them. Teach and help us to love, respect and serve You in one another. Amen. Blessed Archangela Girlani, pray for us. | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | | Find one near you!
