Praying for you,

| AN UNLIKELY FRIENDSHIP “I no longer call you servants…. Instead, I have called you friends.” – John 15:15 In 1971 at Durham, North Carolina, racial tensions were running high. Afraid at how the situation was affecting the youth, Bill Riddick organized a 10-day community meeting to find a solution. Among the leaders were Ann Atwater, a black activist, and C.P. Ellis, then president of the local Ku Klux Klan (KKK), known to harass blacks in order to establish “white supremacy.” Ellis was transformed when he realized that his and Ann’s children face the same issues in the public school. At the end of the meetings, he tore up his KKK membership card and that decision started a close friendship between him and Ann. Together, they devoted their lives to establishing fair and equitable education for all students in Durham’s schools. What an unlikely friendship! It started with the reformation of one and the forgiveness of the other. It reminds me of what we must do to become Jesus’ friend. He already showed us His forgiveness and love by dying on the cross. We need to love Him back and allow Him to transform our lives. Like Ann and Ellis, the resulting bond will last our whole lifetime… and beyond. Cecilia Lim (cez_lim@yahoo.com) REFLECTION: Come and be a friend of Jesus by doing His commands. You’re my friend and my brother even though You’re a King! I love You more than any other! | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | COMPANION | 1st READING There is a concept called the sensum fidele that refers to the ability of the general membership of the Body of Christ to suggest true teaching or doctrine to the Magisterium (Bishops) of the Church. This is the “sense of the faithful” providing doctrinal matter to the leadership in the Church. For example, the doctrine of the Assumption could be at least partially attributed to this mechanism within the Church. There were many petitions put to the Pope from the laity, priests and religious calling for a definition of the Assumption of Mary into Heaven as a doctrine. After consideration the Pope made the necessary proclamation in 1950. Acts 15:22-31 22 The apostles and presbyters, in agreement with the whole church, decided to choose representatives and to send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas. The ones chosen were Judas, who was called Barsabbas, and Silas, leaders among the brothers. 23 This is the letter delivered by them: “The apostles and the presbyters, your brothers, to the brothers in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia of Gentile origin: greetings. 24 Since we have heard that some of our number [who went out] without any mandate from us have upset you with their teachings and disturbed your peace of mind, 25 we have with one accord decided to choose representatives and to send them to you along with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, 26 who have dedicated their lives to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 So we are sending Judas and Silas who will also convey this same message by word of mouth: 28 ‘It is the decision of the holy Spirit and of us not to place on you any burden beyond these necessities, 29 namely, to abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood, from meats of strangled animals, and from unlawful marriage. If you keep free of these, you will be doing what is right. Farewell.’ ” 30 And so they were sent on their journey. Upon their arrival in Antioch they called the assembly together and delivered the letter. 31 When the people read it, they were delighted with the exhortation. P S A L M Psalm 57:8-9, 10, 12 R: I will give you thanks among the peoples, O Lord. 7 [8] My heart is steadfast, O God; my heart is steadfast; I will sing and chant praise. 8 [9] Awake, O my soul; awake, lyre and harp! I will wake the dawn. 9 [10] I will give thanks to you among the peoples, O Lord. I will chant your praise among the nations, 11 [12] Be exalted above the heavens, O God; above all the earth be your glory! G O S P E L We need to be careful about the way we use the word “love” as it is often abused. When we speak of love in the biblical, spiritual and moral sense, we are talking about a commitment that comes from the depth of our hearts. It is not a fad or a feeling that we are talking about, but a deep-rooted commitment that will endure all things and persevere to the end. If we are not willing to persevere to the end with someone, then we cannot truly say that we love the person. John 15:12-17 12 Jesus said to his disciples: “This is my commandment: love one another as I love you. 13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I no longer call you slaves, because a slave does not know what his master is doing. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have heard from my Father. 16 It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you. 17 This I command you: love one another.” Joshua 9-12 my reflections think: If we are not willing to persevere to the end with someone, then we cannot truly say that we love the person. _________________________________________________________ God’s special verse/thought for me today________________ _________________________________________________________ T O D A Y ’ S BLESSING LIST Thank You Lord for: ____________________________________ _______________________________________________________ READ THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR Joshua 9-12 | Didache | Companion | Sabbath | Top | SABBATH | THE CHOICE TO LOVE A job applicant willingly submits himself to many tests in the hope that he would be chosen for a particular job. The possibility of rejection is very real, but the tough hope that he might be chosen gives him the courage to endure all the tension that goes with job hunting. To be chosen means to be picked out, to be selected as the best among the rest. That is the reason why despite the difficulty, the risk is worth taking. But once an applicant passes the exams and interviews, tables change. Whereas before the company had the choice to accept or reject the applicant, now the applicant can choose to accept or reject the company’s offer. And true choice presupposes the freedom and power to commit one’s self. When St. John stresses the message, “You did not choose Me. I chose you,” we do not need to fall in line and submit an application cum resume for God to choose us. He already made the eternal decision to love us, to choose us. “As the Father has loved Me, so I love you,” Jesus said. The measure of Jesus’ love for us is the measure of the Father’s love for Him. Jesus loves us so much because the Father has loved Him first. The love of God comes first. This gives us the power and freedom to also choose God. Jesus admonishes us: “Remain in My love.” This expresses the hope that we would value God’s choice of us. Love can be commanded because it has first been given. To love our fellow human being as God loves us is imitating Jesus who loves us as the Father loves Him. Love is a decision that remains even unto death. Is there a love greater than laying down one’s life for one’s friends? None. Jesus Himself is the supreme example of this love. It brought Him to the cross and the Father’s love raised Him from the dead. Jesus spent Himself, gave Himself until He had nothing more to give. He emptied Himself. In everything He did, Jesus always chose to love. His choice was not a once-and-for-all event; He chose to love at all times. This choice drained Him and squeezed out all the life in Him. The true measure of love is love without measure. Fr. Bobby Titco Reflection Question: Love is a decision. Lord Jesus, each day of my life, I choose to love. I came to life because of love. I go through life with love. I shall depart this life by love. Bless my loving and make it Your way of loving. Amen.
